《Collected Works of Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen》JDol35《The Excellent Differentiation of Emptiness》 《The Excellent Differentiation of Emptiness》 《The Excellent Differentiation of Emptiness》 oṃ guru buddha bodhisattvebhyo namaḥ namaḥ! The Excellent Differentiation of Emptiness. I prostrate and take refuge in the profound emptiness that accords with the eight texts! Sixteen lotus petals, sixteen charnel grounds, Sixteen hand gestures, sixteen pillars, Sixteen great categories, sixteen emptinesses, After paying homage, I write the Excellent Differentiation of Emptiness. In the immaculate treatises of the Jonang tradition, if one does not understand the distinctions such as the two truths regarding the emptinesses that are taught, one cannot comprehend the emptiness of other-emptiness, because all emptinesses are solely self-emptiness. Therefore, clinging to the emptinesses taught in names such as the Tathagatagarbha as merely self-emptiness, this poisonous tree of wrong views will cause many branches of various wrong views to grow profusely. To show this to those who are not skilled, this treatise is composed. Not all emptinesses that are taught are solely self-emptiness, but there is a distinction between the profound emptiness of other-emptiness and the not-so-profound emptiness of self-emptiness. Again, there are two types: emptiness of ultimate truth and emptiness of conventional truth. Again, there are two types: emptiness of the perfectly established nature and emptiness of the imputed nature. Again, there are two types: emptiness that is not Madhyamaka and emptiness that is not an extreme view. Again, there are two types: emptiness that is naturally inherent and emptiness that is artificially adventitious. Again, there are two types: emptiness that is profoundly the nature of phenomena and emptiness that is not profoundly the characteristic of phenomena. Again, there are two types: emptiness of the unborn and emptiness of the born. Again, there are two types: the emptiness of the non-empty and the emptiness of the empty. Again, there are two types: the emptiness of the objects of others and the emptiness of the objects of oneself. Again, there are two types: the emptiness of the essence of non-things and the emptiness of non-things. Again, there are two types: the emptiness that possesses all perfections and the emptiness that analyzes the aggregates and ceases. Again, there are two types: the emptiness of the supreme other, the Buddha who is the first and foremost on the other shore, and... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, there is the emptiness of both inner and outer being adventitious. Again, there are two aspects: the emptiness that is the basis of emptiness, possessing many qualities, and is a non-affirming negation (referring to affirmation through negation); and the emptiness that is merely emptiness, avoiding annihilation through the establishment of dharma (referring to affirmative teachings). Again, there are two aspects: the emptiness that is not empty of itself but is empty of all other dharmas; and the emptiness that is empty in its own essence. Similarly, the two emptinesses of whether the dharmata (nature of phenomena) of all dharmas is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the dharmadhatu (realm of phenomena) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the abiding nature of dharma is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the faultlessness of dharma is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether tathata (suchness) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the non-erroneous tathata is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the non-other tathata is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the correct extreme is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the inconceivable realm is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the imperishable dharmata is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether constantly abiding in equanimity is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the unconditioned wisdom of all-knowingness is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the equality of all dharmas is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the one taste of all dharmas is or is not; the two emptinesses each of whether all dharmas are by nature virtuous, blameless, without outflows, without defilements, pure, transcendent, and unconditioned; the two emptinesses of whether the lineage of nature with many distinctions is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether the tathagatagarbha (buddha-nature) with many qualities is or is not. Similarly, the two emptinesses of whether Mahamadhyamaka (Great Middle Way) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether Mahamudra (Great Seal) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether Mahaparinirvana (Great Nirvana) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether Mahasandhi (Great Perfection) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether Mahabodhi (Great Enlightenment) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether profound Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether profound Nirodhasatya (Truth of Cessation) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether utterly free from elaboration is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether utterly yoga is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether Vajrayoga (Vajra Yoga) is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether coemergent union is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether Buddha's equal union is or is not; the two emptinesses of whether self-nature coemergent... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
