The Chapter Division of 'Mountain Dharma: Ocean of Definitive Meaning' The Chapter Division of 'Mountain Dharma: Ocean of Definitive Meaning' Arising from the mouth of the Teacher, pacifying the dimness of beings' eyes, auspicious! May this (teaching) reside in the mind, for it is both the nectar in the ears of beings, and it pacifies all sicknesses of affliction, therefore it is proper to contemplate its meaning accurately. With these causes, always with respect, the Buddha's words should be equally heeded. Oṃ Āḥ Hūṃ Hoḥ Haṃ Kṣaḥ Namaḥ! I prostrate to the venerable and holy Lama and the ultimate Dharma realm of emptiness, and take refuge. Here, to explain the unique instructions that condense the essence of the nine profound scriptures of ultimate definitive meaning, there are three parts: entering the explanation (Oṃ Guru), the actual explanation, and dedicating the merit of the explanation. (Thus, the Victorious One's) The actual explanation has three parts: a summary of the ground, path, and fruit; a detailed explanation of each of these; and a close condensation of these into instructions. (Thus, the ultimate meaning) The first part has three parts: a summary presentation of the ground, path, and fruit of definitive meaning; (Here, the supreme of liberation) a summary presentation of how these are established by scripture; (Here, these are thus) a summary presentation of the ground, path, and fruit of the two bodies. (Thus, the nature of phenomena) The detailed explanation has three parts: how the ultimate Buddha has been primordially present in the ground; how to rely on the supreme profound path that enables one to attain it; and explaining how to attain the fruit of severance and generation through the path. The first part has seven parts: showing the profound nature of phenomena as the basis of all things, the wisdom of the ground; (Now this) thoroughly establishing it with scripture; advising to abandon the wrong views examined by those unskilled in scripture; advising to abandon the faults of not believing in it; advising to take the benefits of believing in it; abandoning various corrupt wrong conceptions about it; and summarizing the meaning of these, praising and prostrating. (Profound abiding) The second part has fourteen parts: how all the deities of the indivisibility of space and awareness are present, pervading all moving and unmoving things; how that which is present in this way is the Three Jewels of the ultimate nature of phenomena; (Here, the ultimate) also showing how that is the essence of the Sugata with many examples; (Furthermore, the Thus Gone One) also showing how that is the naturally abiding lineage and meaning as one. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Uttaratantra) Furthermore, it shows that the classification of lineages mentioned in the Tantras is the same in meaning. (That lineage also) Furthermore, it shows how it exists in the profound Dharmata Tantra and the Vajra lineage. (Similarly, self) Furthermore, it shows how it exists in the Tantra of the basis and result being inseparable like the sky. (Similarly, the basis) Furthermore, it shows how it exists in the three states of the ultimate Dharmakaya. (Furthermore, impure) Furthermore, it shows how it exists in the three states such as Tathagatagarbha. (Hundred thousand extensive) Furthermore, it shows how it exists in many Mantra lineages such as great afflictions. (Similarly, by nature) Furthermore, it shows how it exists in Nirvana and Dharmakaya, etc., which are inseparable from the basis and result. (In great Nirvana) Furthermore, it shows how it exists in the Dharmata Parinishpanna, which is inseparable from the basis and result. (Similarly, Lankavatara) Furthermore, it shows how it exists in the ultimate Dharmakaya and the collection of all its qualities. (Thus, all dharmas) Therefore, it shows that the noble Nagarjuna and his son also hold this view. (If other) The first part has two sections: the way it is taught from the characteristic of the cause, the Prajnaparamita. (That is also vehicle) The way it is taught from the characteristic of the result, the profound secret mantra. (Similarly, glorious Kye) There are eleven admonitions to abandon the wrong views speculated by those who are not skilled in the scriptures: From showing the necessity, abandoning the sinful view of mistaking the provisional meaning. If the Tathagatagarbha does not exist in meaning, it would be too extreme, refuting this view. (If the Tathagatagarbha) If the pure self, etc., does not exist in meaning, it would be too extreme, refuting this view. (If self) It shows the reason why there is no fault even though the existence or non-existence of self, etc., seems contradictory. (Previously said no self) It shows that the pure self and Aham, etc., are the same in meaning. (Similarly, mudra) It shows that the essence of the pure self and the Prajnaparamita are the same in meaning. (Similarly, mother) Prohibiting those who are not skilled in the nature of reality, it shows how to abide as it is. (Similarly, Udumbara) It shows the intention of teaching the Tathagatagarbha in the seed. (If the Tathagatagarbha) Therefore, it briefly shows how to abide fully possessing the ultimate qualities. (Therefore dharma) Thus, although it always abides in the basis, it shows the reason why it does not appear to the Alaya-vijnana. (Even so, sentient beings) Thus, if it does not abide in this way, then the ultimate would not exist either, which is too extreme, showing this fault. (If the Tathagatagarbha) The first part has two sections: In the Uttaratantra, from showing the necessity, abandoning the sinful view of mistaking the provisional meaning. (If the Uttaratantra) In the Lankavatara Sutra, showing the necessity. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
