One will go to search for a body. Close relatives and family members weep with grief, and the intense suffering of thinking, "What shall I do now that I am dead?" will be unbearable, like a fish thrown onto a sandy beach. Because consciousness is separated from its support, it can travel without obstruction through mountains, houses, land, stones, and rocks. One will say to all those who are grieving, "I am here, do not weep." But because one is not heard, one thinks again that one is dead and suffers greatly. Thinking, "If only I could obtain a body," one goes everywhere to search for a body. One will think that the previous body still exists and will squeeze into all the mountains, rocks, land, and stones. The bardo of existence is extremely painful for twenty-one days. As it says in the *Thigle Sangwa*: "Whatever good or bad was done will appear clearly; all that was previously mixed will appear clearly with a grieving mind. When the place of mixture calls, abandon that path and lie down. Whatever was done before is completely purified; do not forget the things that were mixed. Ride the horse of breath with thoughts; wander everywhere and revolve everywhere." And as it says in the *Kunsel*: "It is the bardo that dwells in light. The so-called bardo of existence is also the appearance of the clear light of reality. Because the wisdom of discrimination has not arisen, the wisdom from before has entered into habit. The appearances of previous habits arise. All the senses are complete and endowed with unobstructedness. The fleshly form of existence appears first. One sees the divine eye that is of the same kind as oneself. One searches for a body and a place to dwell." Others say: Enough with elaboration. This is established by reason, and it should be known that there is not much need for scriptural authority for this debate about the mother texts of one's own and others' continuums, so I will not elaborate further. Regarding the bardo of existence, up to the word "limit." That is to say, the length of the bardo is at most forty-nine days and at least up to seven days. As it says in the *Kayor*: "The life of other beings is seven days; seven days multiplied by seven sevens; that is the limit of life." And as it says in the *Bardo Gyü*: "The wheel of existence turns seven by seven days and nights; one will experience much suffering oneself; it will show the suffering accumulated over eons; it will show all the appearances of the six realms; the bardo mostly occurs in seven days; a bardo occurs once every seven weeks." If one asks to which of the four modes of birth it belongs, it is said in the root texts that it is miraculous birth.

From that discourse: "All births are apparitional births," meaning, as stated in the "Union Tantra": "Birth places are actually of four types, apparitional birth is one of them. Gods, hells, intermediate states, all of these are born from apparitional birth. The manner of body formation, etc." Up to the point of "walking mother," the "Union Tantra" says: "The karmas of the intermediate state of existence, whether they succeed or fail, depend on these signs. There are no latent tendencies of fully ripened karma; due to the power of the intermediate state, similar latent tendencies take shape here." Thus it is said. Similarly, up to the point of "manifesting there," the previous text says: "Whatever the deeds, whether good or bad, the good encounter auspiciousness and delight, the bad, sentient beings with latent tendencies, enter an unpleasant womb." Thus, although there is a saying that birth arises from good or bad karmic connections, this does not refer to that taking birth, nor does it refer to the good or bad karmas of this life and the next; there were signs of this before as well. As the "Intermediate State Sutra" says: "Whatever the results of good or bad deeds may appear, all realms are clear, and the yidam is clear; the Sugatas, the Buddhas, regard them as the supreme of sons; gods and dakinis regard them as brothers and friends; many Yama flesh-eaters carry them and see them as lords; the eight classes of gods and demons appear as servants and attendants; the warmth of breath disappears from the soles of the feet, and is gathered at the Brahma aperture at the crown of the head; the outward breath flows inward, and is released into the uncontrived space of the sky; the appearance of death for those who do evil." Such are the sayings. If asked to which of the three realms it belongs, it belongs to the category of the formless realm, hence the scripture says: "Other than form." Up to the point of "to which category it belongs," the "Union Tantra" says: "The realms are of three kinds, the four aggregates of name have not ceased, the intermediate state exists without taking the next existence, the body is the aggregate of the four names, the color of flesh and blood does not appear, therefore it belongs to the formless realm." Thus it is said. From "intermediate state" to "there is a definite number," the signs of the body have been established as previously mentioned. As for the signs of experience, or karmic connections, and the chapter on afflictions by Longchen Rabjampa, it says: "Related to the body of the next life, the cause of spontaneously arising hatred; likewise, due to the condition of desire, the manner of appearance in the next life." And the "Intermediate State Sutra" says: "Hatred arises towards the father, and desire arises towards the mother, is the sign that consciousness has formed into a male body; hatred arises towards the mother, towards the father."
