How to Ascertain Thatness. How to Ascertain Thatness. How to Ascertain Thatness: Investigating which of body, speech, and mind is primary, seeking the nature of mind through various means, and introducing the three kayas by examining the origin, dwelling place, and destination. There are three aspects to this. The first is: A lama told his disciple to discern which of the three doors—body, speech, and mind—is most important. Some who speak ambiguously say: Of course, mind is the most important. Without the mind's thought, the body cannot move, and speech cannot express anything. This needs to be examined. That is just casual talk. In an impure state, one cannot achieve anything with thought alone, independent of body and speech. Even in a pure state, which of the three vajras is most important? Moreover, the intermediate state mind-body, the dream habitual body, the present flesh and blood body, the form realm clear light body, the empty awareness samadhi body, and so on—there is never a mind that exists independently. Without these, how could there be bodies and so on composed of mind alone? Therefore, how can one consider mind to be primary? Body is for going, staying, moving, and so on; speech is for speaking and so on; mind is for thinking, remembering, and so on. If one thinks there is no difference in importance, then I will explain: Because habitual tendencies are placed at the root of the all-ground consciousness, body and place appear. All those bodies are held by the mind as self. Therefore, they cannot even move on their own, and they separate and decay. Speech cannot express anything without relying on the mind. Furthermore, becoming a Buddha or wandering in samsara, and liberation from samsara, all depend on the mind. Thus, from any perspective, such as cause and effect, the body of experience, awareness, and suffering, and so on, are made by the mind. If they were inherently established, then why wouldn't hellfire burn them? And the parents of those bodies would also be necessary. In short, all of samsara and nirvana are made by the mind. All the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of samsara are the mind's own appearances, and nirvana is the pure appearance of awareness. As the Vajra Tent Tantra says: "Apart from the precious mind, There is no Buddha and no sentient being. The meaning of the abiding of consciousness, There is not even a little external object." And as Aryadeva says: "External objects do not exist, They are only one's own mind."

also be seen. As it is said in the Sambhuti Sutra: "The nature of outer and inner, all these are considered as mind. Other than mind, there is nothing else." Thus, there are various ways of seeing a single external object. Because habits are placed on the mind, various things appear. As the Gur Sutra says: "Due to the habits of beginningless samsara, external objects are completely conceived. It is not a real thing, it is only the mind. The mind is the one that goes everywhere." As it is said. Furthermore, because there is a Vajradhara who holds the three trainings without contradiction, it is also said that the mind is the main thing, so it is also established by the immaculate scriptures. And the body and speech of dreams and bardo are also reasonably made by the mind, because there are no other causes and conditions. If we measure in this way, the white and red of various appearances are also the same. For the Buddha who has exhausted the elaboration of dualistic dharmas, those are impossible. Some divide samsara into self-generated and common, but they are referring to the appearance of terms, only the way of explaining conventional truth. In terms of the establishment of terms, all sentient beings in samsara are liberated, and it is difficult to place an empty vessel in the trace of emptiness. It is said that after waking up from a dream, there is a common dream world. As such, my father once said: "All of samsara and nirvana are made only by the appearance of one sentient being." To this, some stubborn debaters say: "If one is liberated, then all are liberated. If one is confused, then even Samantabhadra Buddha will be troubled." It is said that all sects are considered as one entity. Furthermore, to say to this, for example, if one sentient being dies in a dream, then all die. What is the use of such arguments? Who would allow just this to be established as intelligent? One who appears as a Buddha in a dream liberates all, and all sentient beings in the dream are considered as one entity. If you argue with that sect, it is like buying a bunch of laughter at a high price. Everything is like a dream, as it is also said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Likewise, seeing, hearing, knowing, and distinguishing, all these are untrue, like dreams. If you examine it, no essence is seen at all. All dharmas should be known as such." As it is and the protector Nagarjuna said: "Like a dream, like an illusion." All that is said is like a parrot learning to speak.
