The Dragon's Vow Called Vajra Beak The Dragon's Vow Called Vajra Beak In Sanskrit: Vajratuṇḍa nāma nāga samaya In Tibetan: The Dragon's Vow Called Vajra Beak. Homage to the All-Knowing One! Then, the Bhagavan resided in the great city called Abandoned Play, with a great assembly of retinues gathered, including the retinue of nagas, and the great assembly of gods and humans, for the great benefit of sentient beings, teaching the Dharma that fulfills all thoughts and hopes, bringing happiness. Then, from that city, came a Brahmin boy named Khyab ma spyan, who was wealthy, rich in possessions, enjoying great prosperity, abundantly endowed with many substances and implements, having gone beyond the Vedas and the branches of the Vedas, entering into mantras, one who had accomplished mantras. He repeatedly summoned nagas and performed fire offerings. Since the crops of that Brahmin were ripening but there was a cessation of rain, he, with a proud tone, in accordance with the mantra, said: 'I shall cause a stream of rain to descend and summon the nagas.' Then he prepared to perform a fire offering, mixing sesame seeds, rice, and mustard oil with hot oil, and making offerings. Then, he created the form of an unruly naga. He praised an iron stake and struck it into the crown of the naga's head. The naga's crown split open, and it experienced great suffering. That naga became greatly agitated, and enraged, in an instant, with the power of the naga pervading everything, causing great harm, emitting hot rays of dust from its own body, covering it with great harm, and burning the Brahmin's field. Then, a great stream of rain, like tongues falling, descended upon the Brahmin's body, and that Brahmin was without protector, without refuge, without support. He abandoned the fire offering and thought, 'I should seek protection, refuge, and support from the Bhagavan.' Then he ran to the Bhagavan, went to where the Bhagavan was, prostrated at the two feet of the Bhagavan, and said: 'Bhagavan, I fear that the wrathful nagas will cruelly take my life, and I have no refuge. Bhagavan, please protect me!'

I beseech the Sugata to protect me! Then, the Blessed One, having relieved the great Brahmin of his fear, spoke thus: Great Brahmin, do not be afraid! I will be your protector, refuge, and helper. Having said this, he remained silent. Then, the great Yaksha general Vajrapani addressed the Blessed One thus: Blessed One, please behold! Even though it is clearly visible, the nagas are not subdued, causing the crops to fail. Blessed One, after your complete passing into nirvana, in the future, in the times to come, who will be the refuge for all sentient beings? What will become of them? Blessed One, for the sake of all crops, so that the crops may not wither, for their universal protection, for their increase, for the complete protection of the crops and the subjugation of the nagas, please explain this! Then, the Blessed One spoke to the secret lord Vajrapani: Vajrapani, there is a dharani called "Hidden Vajra Essence" that completely subdues the nagas, which is the essence and seal of the Tathagata, spoken by the Buddhas of the past, the Arhats, the perfectly enlightened ones, and I will also explain it. By this, all harm will be quickly averted, and all crops will quickly grow, and will be well protected. The great valleys of fire mountains, from all ten directions, will cut off the boundaries of all nagas. The sequence of burning flames, the great clouds, the layers of clouds called "the power of the sky-dancing wings," will cover the sky. All crops, flowers, and fruits will be universally protected and abide. This will cause all beings, including the nagas, to burn universally. The unsubdued nagas will be destroyed and subdued. Then, the great Yaksha general Vajrapani addressed the Blessed One thus: Blessed One, for the benefit of all sentient beings, please explain the mantra words of this great dharani. Then, the Blessed One spoke this essence: Namo Bhagavate, Sarva Buddhānām (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: Homage to the Blessed One, of all Buddhas). Namo Bhagavate Shakya Rajaya (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: Homage to the Blessed One, Shakya King). Om Jvala Jvala (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning: Om, burn burn)
