Thus I have heard, At one time, the Bhagavan was dwelling on the Mountain of the Ascetics, together with a large gathering of Bodhisattvas, great beings. Then, the Bodhisattva, the great being Avalokiteshvara, arose from his seat, arranged his robes, knelt on the ground with his knees, joined his palms, and said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, I have a great dharani called the Wheel of the Essence of Sandalwood of the Great Lotus, which accomplishes all wishes and deeds. If the Tathagata, with great compassion, would allow me to speak it, I would, by the power of the Bhagavan's blessing, speak it for the benefit of all sentient beings." Why is that? Bhagavan, this dharani possesses the power of great splendor, and like a great wish-fulfilling jewel and a wish-fulfilling tree, it completely fulfills all wishes. Then, the Bhagavan praised the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, saying, "Well done, well done! Because you have approached in this way out of compassion for sentient beings, I will allow you to speak this unimpeded dharani." The Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, having received this permission, arose, joined his palms, prostrated, and then returned to his seat. Focusing his mind, he looked upon the assembled gathering and, with a mind filled with great compassion, spoke this mantra: Namo Ratna Trayaya.
