Ānanda, these bases of the secret mantra of the dharani have been spoken by eighty-four crore Buddhas, and whoever transgresses these bases of the secret mantra of the dharani is betraying all those Buddhas. Whichever son or daughter of good family protects these bases of the secret mantra of the dharani on dry, waterless wood, completely rescues, completely remembers, binds, pacifies, and makes it happy, then that tree will also grow shoots and leaves, and flowers and fruits will also appear and ripen, what need is there to mention humans? Ananda, it is difficult to find the appearance of a Buddha. These roots of Dharani mantras are difficult to find. Ananda, it is also extremely difficult to hold these roots of Dharani mantras. Ananda, whichever son of a lineage or daughter of a lineage holds, receives, grasps, recites, understands these roots of Dharani mantras, and also widely proclaims them to others, that person will be able to remember past lives in twenty-one lifetimes. Even in this life, apart from previous karma, one will also transcend all other harms and be in harmony with all beings. If protection is done for someone, then all beings will not be able to harm that person. Gods and nagas, yakshas and gandharvas, asuras and garudas, kinnaras and mahoragas, humans and non-humans, all of these will not be able to harm that person. Snakes and worms, ruda worms, iron powder bees, all of these will not be able to harm that person. Plague and wind, bile and phlegm, mixed diseases and all that arises from seasonal changes will not be able to harm that person. One-day sickness, or two-day sickness, or three-day sickness, or four-day sickness, or seven-day sickness, or half-month sickness, or one-month sickness, or one-year sickness, or long-term sickness, or momentary sickness, all of these will not be able to harm that person. Smallpox, or herpes, or leg ringworm, or boils, or fire sores, or scabies, or dog bark sores, or itching, or leprosy.
