The Tale of Tiger Ears The Tale of Tiger Ears In Sanskrit: Śāla Karṇa Avadāna. In Tibetan: The Tale of Tiger Ears. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus I have heard: Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika in Sravasti. Then, the Venerable Ananda, in the early morning, wearing his robes and carrying his bowl, entered Sravasti for alms. Then, the Venerable Ananda, having finished his alms round and completed his meal, went to another spring for water. When he arrived there, at that time, a Candala girl named Fair Form was drawing water at that spring. Then, the Venerable Ananda said these words to the Candala girl Fair Form: "Sister, please give me water." Then, the Candala girl Fair Form said these words to the Venerable Ananda: "Venerable Ananda, I am a Candala girl." "Sister, I do not ask about your lineage or birth. Please give me water, I want to drink." Then, the Candala girl Fair Form gave water to the Venerable Ananda. Then, the Venerable Ananda drank the water and left. Then, the Candala girl Fair Form carefully memorized the Venerable Ananda's face, body, and voice. Due to improper attention, intense attachment arose. She developed a desire for the Venerable Ananda, thinking, "My mother knows mantras, and through the power of those mantras, I can entice the Noble Ananda to become my husband." Then, the Candala girl Fair Form, carrying the water, returned to the place where the Candalas lived. She placed the water pot aside and said these words to her mother: "Mother, please be aware. The bhikkhu named Ananda, who is a disciple and attendant of the ascetic Gautama, I want him as my husband. Please use your magic to entice him here." Her mother said, "If Ananda were not peaceful and free from desire, I might be able to entice him. But, the...

King Sälgyal devoutly served and honored the ascetic Gautama. If he knew, he would destroy all the Chandalas. It was heard that the ascetic Gautama, being free from desire, subdues all. Having said this, the beautiful Chandala girl said to her mother: Even if the ascetic Gautama is free from desire, if I do not entice his attendant monk Ananda, I will die. If I entice him, I will live. The mother said: Do not give up your life to entice the ascetic Ananda. Then, the mother of the beautiful Chandala girl plastered the center of the house with cow dung and made it square. She cut Durva grass, lit a fire, and recited mantras over one hundred and eight flowers and Arka, throwing them one by one into the fire. The wisdom mantra for that is: (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) Then, the venerable Ananda's mind was moved, and he arose from the monastery and went to the Chandala's house. Then, the Chandala girl saw the venerable Ananda coming from afar. Seeing him, she said to the beautiful girl: Know that the boy who is coming is the ascetic Ananda. Then, the beautiful Chandala girl was happy and delighted, and she prepared a bed for the venerable Ananda. Then, the venerable Ananda went to the Chandala's house, and having arrived, he sat down on a bench to one side. The venerable Ananda wept and said: If I have attained this terrible state, now the Blessed One will not think of me. Then, the Blessed One thought of the venerable Ananda. As soon as he thought of him, he nullified the Chandala's mantra with the mantra of the perfectly complete Buddha. His mantra is: སྠི་ཏི་ར་ཙུ་ཏི་ར་ནི་ས (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning)

Then, the venerable Ananda undid the vidya-mantra of the candala, came out of the candala's house, and began to go to his own monastery. The candala's daughter, a beautiful woman, saw him, looked at the venerable Ananda, and said to her mother: 'Oh, mother, the bhikshu Ananda is walking.' Her mother said: 'Son, surely the shramana Gautama has remembered him, therefore my mantra has become ineffective.' The beautiful woman said: 'Then, mother, is the shramana Gautama's mantra particularly powerful, and ours is not like that?' To this, the mother said again: 'Son, the shramana Gautama's mantra is particularly powerful, and ours is not like that. Son, any mantra in the world that has power, if the shramana Gautama wants, he can completely destroy it.' 'Moreover, all the worldly mantras that have power cannot completely destroy the shramana Gautama's mantra.' Therefore, the shramana Gautama's mantra is the most powerful. Then, the venerable Ananda went to where the Blessed One was, gradually approached, touched the Blessed One's feet with his head, and sat to one side. After sitting to one side, the venerable Ananda reported the situation to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: 'Ananda, you should proclaim and uphold this six-syllable vidya-mantra. You should universally uphold it, so that it will be beneficial to yourself, you will feel happy, and the bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, and upasikas will also obtain benefit and happiness. Ananda, this six-syllable vidya-mantra is: spoken by the six Buddhas, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, the Four Great Kings, the Lord of the Gods Indra, the Brahma Lord of the Saha world, and the currently Perfectly Awakened One.'
