The Sutra Showing the Maturation of Virtuous and Non-Virtuous Actions. The Sutra Showing the Maturation of Virtuous and Non-Virtuous Actions. The Sutra Showing the Maturation of Virtuous and Non-Virtuous Actions. One fascicle. Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti, surrounded by countless Bodhisattvas and a great assembly of gods and humans, teaching the Dharma. Then, for the sake of many sentient beings, Ananda requested the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, in this world realm, among those born within the same kind, there are those who are good, and those who are ugly; those who are strong, and those who are weak; those who are poor, and those who are rich; those who are afflicted, and those who are happy; those who are powerful, and those who are base; their languages are different, and their words do not agree. Some live to be a hundred years old and then die, while others die at thirty or ten. Some are beautiful but poor, while others are ugly but rich. Some are talented even among the lowly, while others are untalented but of high status. Some are afflicted but live long, while others are happy but short-lived. Some who act virtuously encounter misfortune, while others who act non-virtuously become better off. Some are white-skinned, with good flesh, and are unwavering. Some are dark and black but radiant. Some are small and short but full of vigor. Some are tall and long but serve as slaves to others. Some have many children, while others are ignorant. Some are always wandering outside and hungry. Some live in palaces, free from worries about clothing and food, and enjoy wealth and luxury. Some are poor when young but rich and powerful when old. Honest and cautious, yet they get caught up in lawsuits for not violating [the law]. The father is loving, and the son is very filial, versed in academic letters and scriptures, quoting and explaining them. Brothers are discordant and quarrelsome. Some have high status and possess various kinds of wealth. Some are homeless and live by begging. Birds and wild animals.

There are also those who live like wild animals. There are also those who wear wool clothes, eat meat, and are illiterate. There are also those who remain still yet are happy and attain merit. There are also those who live on wages. There are also those who are narrow-minded and closed off. There are also those who are ignorant, dull, and evil. There are also those who search but do not find. There are also those who do not search but find. There are also those who are rich, powerful, and wealthy but very stingy. There are also those who are poor but crave generosity. There are also those who speak truthfully and gently. There are also those whose words sting like thorns. There are also those who are loved and respected by others. There are also those who are abandoned and alienated by all. There are also those who nourish sentient beings with compassion. There are also those who recklessly take lives. There are also those who are broad-minded and get along with everyone. There are also those who are disliked by all. There are also those who are incompatible with their daughters-in-law and mothers-in-law. There are also those who associate with crows and sparrows. Some people like to talk about Dharma. Some people feel sleepy after hearing the Sutras. Some people are outwardly vulgar but intelligent. Some people like monasteries and are diligent in meditation. Some people are like animals. Some people transform into various kinds of deer. If the Bhagavan explains the causes and results in detail, then many attendants, having heard it, will single-mindedly follow the path of virtue. The Bhagavan said: Good man, just as you asked why the ripening results are different, it is because their actions in previous lives were different. Therefore, there are various differences. Now, a beautiful appearance comes from patience. Ugliness comes from hatred and anger. Poverty comes from stinginess. Power and greatness come from respectfully prostrating to the Buddha. All wicked people come from arrogance and pride. A tall and beautiful body comes from respecting others. A short body comes from being lazy towards the Dharma. Stupidity comes from ignorance. Thinness and darkness come from obscuring the body of the Tathagata. Low lips come from tasting the food of the Dharma teachers. Squinting eyes come from not giving fire to others.
