The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra Showing the Causes and Results of Good and Bad. The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra Showing the Causes and Results of Good and Bad. In Tibetan: The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra Showing the Causes and Results of Good and Bad. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park, in the garden of King Jetas. At that time, the Blessed One was teaching the Dharma to those who were surrounded by countless Bodhisattvas and large retinues of gods and humans, listening to the Dharma with one-pointed minds. Then, the Venerable Ānanda, for the sake of sentient beings, requested the Blessed One as follows: Blessed One, in the present world, although beings are born as humans in the same way, some are ugly and some have unattractive appearances; some are brave and some are weak; some are poor and some are rich; some are suffering and some are endowed with happiness; some are noble and some are base; their voices are dissimilar and their languages are different; some live to be a hundred years old and do not die, while some die early after reaching thirty years of age; some die suddenly after reaching fifteen years of age; some die in the mother's womb; some have ugly appearances but are beautiful; some are poor and base, and their appearances are unattractive; some are rich and are born into noble families; some are brave but become inferior; some are weak but are born into high castes; some suffer but live long lives, while some are happy but have short lives; some practice virtue but are accompanied by faults; some commit evil but obtain the benefits of merit; some are short and white but have squinting eyes and are not clear; some are blue and black but are endowed with the beauty of the womb; some are short and small but are endowed with mental strength; some are tall and large but serve others; some have many children while some live alone; some are

Now, wandering and suffering from hunger and cold, some live in homes yet enjoy the abundance of clothing and food. Some are poor and destitute in their youth but become wealthy in their old age. Some, though without fault, are forcibly subjected to harsh floggings. Some have compassionate parents and filial sons who discuss the meaning of sutras and shastras. Some brothers fight and quarrel with each other. Some build houses and possess various kinds of wealth. Some, lacking houses, depend on others. Some, like birds, dwell in trees and fields. Some resemble wild animals, clad in fur, eating grass, and drinking blood. Some are illiterate. Some, without doing anything, experience the ripening of happiness. Some cannot even find a place to be a servant. Some are endowed with clear senses and wisdom. Some lack clear senses and wisdom. Some, if they seek, will eventually obtain. Some find even without seeking. Some are rich but very miserly. Some are poor but delight in giving. Some speak softly and pleasantly. Some speak harshly and rudely. Some are honored and loved by many. Some are abandoned by many from afar. Some nurture living beings with loving-kindness. Some kill countless living beings. Some are pleasing to the vast majority. Some are abandoned by others. Some are hated by their wives and in-laws. Some bring joy to all their relatives and friends. Some delight in hearing the words of the Dharma. Some fall asleep after hearing the sutras. Some are brave and capable but lack eloquence, while some are inclined to study words and meanings. Some make various kinds of different animal forms. Blessed One.

Please extensively explain what are the causes and consequences of those who have passed away? May the many attendants hear and understand, and wholeheartedly devote themselves to virtuous deeds. The Blessed One said: Ananda, just as you have asked, all those who experience different ripening results are all due to the unequal actions of past lives. Therefore, they experience many differences of hundreds and thousands. Being ugly in this life comes from enduring and accepting; having an unpleasant appearance comes from anger; even if reborn as a human, being poor comes from being stingy; even if reborn as a human, being rich comes from giving; being reborn as a noble person comes from respectfully prostrating to others; being reborn as a lowly person comes from arrogance; even if reborn as a human, being tall and large comes from respectfully honoring others; being short comes from despising the Dharma; even if reborn as a human, being unhappy comes from slaughtering sheep in the past; even if reborn as a human, being dark and thin comes from obscuring the light of the Tathagata; even if reborn as a human, having ugly lips comes from eating food from stupas; even if reborn as a human, having red eyes comes from being stingy with fire; even if reborn as a human, having blurred vision comes from gouging out the eyes of crows; even if reborn as a human, being mute comes from slandering the Dharma; even if reborn as a human, being deaf comes from not liking to hear the Dharma; even if reborn as a human, having sharp teeth comes from liking to gnaw bones and eat meat; even if reborn as a human, having a upturned nose comes from offering the Tathagata with things that do not smell good; even if reborn as a human, having lips
