Entering and appearing like actions in water, and also invisible in entering. He also showed fire burning from the lower part of his body and water flowing from the upper part of his body. In the sky above, without obstruction, he showed countless kinds of miracles from hundreds to thousands. Descending from the sky, he extensively taught the Dharma to many retinues, making them joyful, praising, and happy. He caused countless hundreds of thousands of beings to generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. He caused countless hundreds of thousands of beings to attain the fruits from stream-enterer to arhat. Furthermore, he caused countless hundreds of thousands of beings to generate the mind of hearers and solitary buddhas. After Shariputra had done such immeasurable beneficial and happy deeds, he said to the many retinues: What should I do so that I will not see the Tathagata pass into nirvana before me? Then, rising into the sky above, he emitted flames from his body, burned his body, and passed into nirvana. At that time, the many retinues were heartbroken, looking at Shariputra without blinking their eyes, crying loudly, and their bodies were covered with dust. The sun also lost its light, and the earth and sky also shook greatly. Then, the many retinues collected Shariputra's bones, built a stupa, and made offerings. At that time, countless hundreds of thousands of the retinues, because of remembering Shariputra, were distressed by suffering, intoxicated and confused, and lost their memory. Then, the Tathagata, with the power of compassion, manifested as Shariputra and sat among the retinue, and when the many retinues saw Shariputra, their unpleasant suffering subsided, and they became very happy again. Having turned into a joyful mind in this way, everyone generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Then, Ananda, knowing with his mind that the many retinues had become doubtful due to the blessing of the Tathagata, rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe on one side, knelt on his right knee, and bowed with folded palms, saying to the Buddha: Blessed One...

For what reason and cause did Shariputra pass into Nirvana before the Tathagata, causing many in the assembly to be displeased and mourn? The Blessed One addressed Ananda and the many in the assembly: Not only now does Shariputra pass into Nirvana before the Tathagata, but in the past as well, he could not bear to see me pass into Nirvana first, and so he passed away first. Then Ananda asked the Buddha: Blessed One, what was the matter of Shariputra passing into Nirvana first in the past? The Blessed One said: Listen well. In the past, countless eons ago, there was a place called Varanasi. The king of Varanasi was called Great Light. King Great Light ruled over sixty border kingdoms and eight hundred cities. That king always had a compassionate heart and gave alms to all without contradicting their wishes. At that time, one border kingdom did not like that king and constantly harbored evil thoughts. King Great Light, every month on the sixth day, combined with the sun of six seasons, loaded five hundred yaks with precious jewels, wealth, clothes, food, and drink, piled them up at the market and the four gates of the city, and gave alms to all. At that time, the enemy border kingdom heard that King Great Light gave alms to all without contradicting their wishes, giving clothes, food, gold, silver, and even precious jewels as they desired. Hearing this, the border kingdom became jealous of King Great Light's merit of giving alms. He gathered his ministers and said: Which of you can go and take the head of King Great Light of Varanasi? The ministers replied: None of us can do it. Then he announced to everyone: Whoever can take the head of King Great Light of Varanasi and bring it here, I will give a thousand taels of gold. Then a Brahmin said: I can.

Can you go to beg for land? Please prepare my utensils and provisions. From here to Varanasi is a distance of six thousand yojanas, so after preparing provisions and utensils accordingly, the Brahmin went to Varanasi. At that time, when that Brahmin arrived at the place of Varanasi, the great earth also shook in six ways. Beasts and deer also fled in fear in all directions. The sun and moon also became unclear and invisible as if they were obscured. The five planets and stars also did not run on time. Rainbows like red and black and white, appear at all times of day and night. The stars also became chaotic and fell. The rivers and springs and bathing ponds and flowers and fruit trees that flourished and were pleasing in that place also dried up. Then, that Brahmin also went to the gate of the palace of the King of Varanasi. At that time, the gatekeeper deity of the palace said these words to the gatekeeper: This bad Brahmin has come from a long way to beg for the head of the Great Light King, you must not let him in. Then, that Brahmin could not enter the palace, and after staying for seven days, he said these words to the gatekeeper: I have come from a long way and want to see the Great King, please inform him. Then, the gatekeeper also informed him in the same way, saying that a Brahmin has come from a long way and is now waiting at the gate. After hearing those words, the king immediately came to the gate to greet him, and after bowing like a father and son meeting, he asked: Where have you come from? Did you not feel tired and weary on the way? The Brahmin said: I have heard from other places about the virtue of the King giving alms in a way that does not go against people's wishes, and your good name has spread throughout heaven and earth, and I have heard that your virtues are not false but true, so I have also come specifically through mountains and rivers, with hope. The king said: I am now called the giver of all things, if there is begging or need, do not hesitate, please beg. The Brahmin said: Is it true? I do not need anything else, only a great sacrifice.
