Seventh, Chapter on Compassion. Seventh, Chapter on Compassion. The Great Skillful Means Buddha Repaying Kindness Sutra, Volume Five. At that time, the Blessed One was attended to and revered by many attendants. After making offerings, they praised and extolled him, circumambulating him and sitting facing him. Then, the Thus-Gone One, indulging in the immeasurably profound realm of activity, in order to liberate many beings from the unbearable suffering of the three realms, to eliminate the five obscurations, to untie all bonds, to enable all sentient beings to attain liberation, and to establish them in the unconditioned bliss, he divided and revealed two fields of merit. What are the two? The field of merit of manifest action and the field of merit of non-manifest action. And what are they? Parents, Khenpo (abbot), Lama (guru), Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, and Bodhisattvas. If sentient beings perform meritorious deeds of offering towards them, they will attain the fruit of the path. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the chief of the wise, Shariputra, and other great attendants, saying: Know this, the Thus-Gone One will soon pass into Nirvana. Shariputra, upon hearing these words, felt as uncomfortable as if his limbs were pierced by needles, overwhelmed by sorrow, he fell to the ground and fainted. People sprinkled cold water on his face, and after a long time, he regained consciousness. He arose, folded his palms, and praised with these verses: To the nectar of the Buddha's teachings, Listening brings no weariness or boredom. Neither dominated by laziness, Nor anything that cannot benefit. In the ocean of the five degenerations, Like sinking in a muddy swamp. Bound by craving and desire, Ignorance causes beings to wander in samsara. In the past, practicing the true Dharma, Because of giving equally, The space between the eyebrows is endowed with marks, The light is immeasurable. The eyes are like the crescent moon, Seeing all realms in the ten directions without exception. The eye of the mind for all beings, Seeing it brings great joy. At that time

Shariputra praised the Tathagata with hundreds of thousands of verses, bowed his head to his feet, circumambulated him hundreds of thousands of times, and then said to the gods, nagas, humans, and non-humans: "Oh, sons of good family, alas, alas, the world is empty! Alas, alas, the world is empty! Woe is me, woe is me, the world is empty! The precious and sacred bridge of Dharma has collapsed! The supreme Bodhi tree is broken! The precious and sacred victory banner has fallen! The supreme sun of the Buddha has set in the great mountain of Nirvana!" Having said these words, all the many attendants were alarmed and terrified to the point that all the hairs on their bodies stood on end. The sun also lost its light, and the mountains also collapsed. The great earth also shook violently. Then, Shariputra spoke these verses to the many attendants: "I see the body of the Buddha, like a mountain of refined gold. Names and qualities, all cease, only the name remains. In order to emerge from the three realms, one should strive diligently. If one is to choose virtuous deeds, Nirvana is the supreme bliss." Then, Shariputra, in order to make the many attendants rejoice, manifested the power of miraculous abilities. Through the power of miraculous abilities, he ascended into the sky above and transformed into a great jewel-wool elephant with a thousand heads. The wool elephants clung to each other, and a thousand heads looked outward. Each of the wool elephants had seven tusks, and each tusk had a bathing pond. Each pond had seven lotus flowers. Each lotus flower had an emanation Buddha residing on it. Each emanation Buddha had an attendant Shariputra. Each Shariputra emitted great rays of light, illuminating the ten directions of the world as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and gathered all beings with affinity. After all those with affinity had gathered, Shariputra manifested a great body filling the entire sky. He also showed the transformation from a great body to a tiny body.
