Chapter Six: The Chapter on Evil Deeds. Chapter Six: The Chapter on Evil Deeds. The Great Skillful Buddha Repaying Kindness Sutra, Volume Four. At that time, the Blessed One was surrounded by the fourfold assembly, who made offerings, served, revered, and praised him with words. At that time, the Tathagata smiled and emitted blue, yellow, red, and white rays of light from his mouth, called Great Compassion, illuminating the realms of the ten directions, from the peak of existence down to the eighteen great hells of sentient beings. The light also illuminated the body of Devadatta, causing him to be relieved of suffering and attain happiness. Then, all of the many attendants praised the Tathagata in unison, saying, "Excellent! Excellent! The Blessed One is endowed with great love and great compassion, and is truly impartial, treating enemies and friends equally. Although Devadatta always harms and opposes the Blessed One, the Blessed One still compassionately cares for him, emitting the light of great compassion to touch Devadatta's body, freeing him from suffering." Then, the Blessed One spoke to the many attendants, saying, "Devadatta not only harms me in this life, but also always harmed me in past lives, but I have always brought him benefit and happiness through the power of love and compassion." Then, Ananda, knowing the thoughts of the many attendants, arose from his seat to dispel everyone's doubts, arranged his upper robe to one side, knelt on his right knee, and bowed with folded palms. Then, he said to the Blessed One, "What harm did Devadatta cause to the Blessed One in past lives? Please, Blessed One, reveal those things." The Blessed One said to Ananda, "Listen well, and I will explain and tell you." The Blessed One said, "In the past, countless eons ago, in a place called Varanasi (ancient Indian place name, now Varanasi), there was a Buddha, the Blessed One, the Tathagata,

The destroyer, the perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the knower of the world, the unsurpassed tamer of beings, the teacher, the victorious one, appeared in the world, and after benefiting sentient beings for ten thousand years, he passed into nirvana. After nirvana, the true Dharma remained for twenty thousand years. After the Dharma of images also disappeared, in a place called Varanasi, there was a king named Maharadza, who was naturally virtuous and possessed of wise intellect. He ruled the country with the true Dharma, and the people were happy and prosperous. That king ruled over sixty small countries on the border and eight hundred large cities, and also had five hundred elephants from Nepal. Although he had twenty thousand consorts, he had no sons. Therefore, the king constantly made offerings and prayers to the gods of the world, mountains, rivers, tree gods, etc., and after twelve years, the great queen gave birth to a son, and the middle queen also gave birth to a son. The king was very happy, and the king personally took care of them, attending to them with gentle and excellent things such as care, respect, bedding, food, drink, and other necessities. In this way, after attending to them for ten months, the great queen gave birth to a son who was handsome and beautiful, adorned with good marks, and possessed of perfect human characteristics. The middle queen also gave birth to a son, and the king was overjoyed. He gathered the ministers, the diviners, and the Brahmins, showed them the sons, and asked for names. The diviners looked at the signs and asked, "What kind of omens appeared when this prince was born?" The king said, "The mother of the great prince, the great queen, was formerly naturally wrathful, jealous, and arrogant, but since conceiving the son, she has become naturally virtuous and gentle. She is always smiling, and she loves all beings like her own child, smiling with a loving heart, and speaking frankly." After that, the diviners also named the prince.

He was named Gedun (དགེ་དོན་). When the middle-ranking queen was pregnant with a prince, (the king) asked her what kind of omens had occurred before. She replied, "The mother of this prince is naturally virtuous, always smiling, speaks frankly, and pleases everyone. However, since becoming pregnant with the prince, she has become naturally angry, full of hatred, jealousy, and arrogance." The diviner said, "This is also the karmic residue of the prince's previous life. Therefore, the prince's name was named Ngedun (ངན་དོན་)." After that, the two princes were raised, and when they reached the age of fourteen, Prince Gedun was naturally endowed with a wise mind and a compassionate heart. He loved giving alms, so his parents loved this prince even more, cherishing him like the apple of their eye. Prince Ngedun was naturally angry, so his parents did not like him either, hating him. Prince Ngedun was always jealous, thinking of harming his elder brother. Later, at another time, Prince Gedun and his entourage were playing and went outside the palace to watch the scenery and stroll. They saw the farmers plowing the fields, and worms emerged from the plowing soil, and many birds flew to peck and eat them. Prince Gedun saw these and felt compassion. He thought, "I was born in a deep palace and have never seen or heard of such things." He asked his attendants, "Why do these (birds and worms) harm and devour each other?" The attendants said to the prince, "Now, this country ruled by the king also depends on the subjects. The subjects also depend on food, and food is the five grains produced from cultivation, which sustain the lives of sentient beings." The prince said to this, "How sad, how sad!" They continued to walk and saw men and women spinning and weaving. They pushed each other and looked distressed. Seeing these, he asked the servants standing on the left and right, "What are these people doing?" They replied, "These people are doing the work of spinning and weaving, using it to cover and clothe our bodies. This is also a sad and painful work." Then, they continued to walk and saw many people slaughtering cattle, yaks, horses, pigs, and sheep.
