Perfect and complete enlightenment is achieved only after a very long time of extremely difficult practice. Can you endure extreme suffering? The prince said: Even if a burning iron wheel constantly spins on top of my head, I will not retreat from unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment because of that much suffering. Indra said: Who would believe these empty words you speak? Then the prince made a vow and uttered this prayer: If the words I speak are false, and I have deceived the king of the gods, may the wound on my body never heal. If the words I speak are true, may my body be restored and my blood turn to milk. As soon as he spoke, the wound on his body healed as before, and his blood turned to milk. The prince's appearance became even better, more attractive, and more beautiful than before. He stood up and bowed his head at the feet of Indra. Then Indra said to the prince: Well done! Very well done! With your exceedingly courageous diligence, you will undoubtedly attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment without difficulty. When you attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment before long, please benefit me first. Having said this, Indra, the king of the gods, disappeared in that direction of the sky. At that time, the king and queen also went to that enemy king, and that king welcomed them from afar and provided the necessary items as they wished. At that time, the king and queen told that king in detail how the prince had offered his own flesh and blood to his parents. After hearing how that had happened, that king, in order to repay the prince's kindness of offering his flesh and blood to his parents and serving them wholeheartedly, deployed four types of armies and launched a war against that king and the region of Varanasi. At that time, that king set out on the road with the four types of armies, and when he arrived at the place where the prince had left, he thought: My son will surely die here. I must at least collect my son's bones and take them back to my country.

Thinking of cherishing him, he cried out and went to collect the bones of his son. From afar, he saw that the wounds on my son's body had healed, and he was even better and more beautiful than before, coming before me. Then the king took him into his arms and said, "Are you still alive?" The prince then told the king and queen what had happened. The king and queen were overjoyed, and everyone rode the oxen back to my country. Due to the power of that prince's merit, my country was also recovered, and Prince Dondup was enthroned as king. The Blessed One told Ananda, "Do you think that the one who became the father at that time was someone else? Do not look at it that way. Why? The father at that time is now my father, Śuddhodana. Do you think that the one who became the mother at that time was someone else? Do not look at it that way, for that is now my mother, Lhamo Dzema (Beautiful Goddess). Do you think that the one who became Prince Dondrup at that time was someone else? Do not look at it that way. That prince at that time is now Śākyamuni, myself. The one who became Indra, the lord of the gods, at that time is now Ajñātakauṇḍinya." When the Blessed One taught this chapter on serving parents, in that mandala of the assembly, twenty million bodhisattvas gained the eloquence of speech, skilled in benefiting and bringing happiness to all beings. Twelve million bodhisattvas obtained the forbearance of the Dharma regarding the unborn Dharma. Furthermore, countless śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, gathered from the ten directions, abandoned the minds of the two vehicles and reached the ultimate state through the one vehicle. Countless laymen and laywomen attained from the first fruit up to the fruits of the two vehicles. Hundreds of thousands of gods and humans generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Moreover, gods, nāgas, pretas, and asuras...

and, Gandharvas, Garudas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, humans and non-humans, etc., among the many assemblies, some generated the unsurpassed Bodhicitta, and some generated the mind between Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The Blessed One said to Ananda: Bodhisattvas, for the benefit of all sentient beings, in order to serve their parents, even offer their bodies, flesh, and blood to their parents, practicing extremely difficult practices, just like this. All the many retinues, after hearing what the Buddha said, each obtained the meaning of benefit and happiness. Rejoicing and exulting, they bowed with their heads, circumambulated from the right side, and then returned. From the Sutra of Great Skillful Means for Repaying the Buddha's Kindness, it is called the Chapter of Service, the second chapter. Second Chapter, Chapter of Service.
