It should be done accordingly. Monks, it should also be understood in this way, just as I know the fruit of giving and the ripening of giving. Sentient beings should also know the fruit of giving and the ripening of giving. Any last mouthful of food should not be eaten by oneself without giving it to others. One should not allow the defilement of a miserly mind to arise and entangle. Just as I know, sentient beings do not know the fruit of giving and the ripening of giving. Therefore, sentient beings should not eat any last mouthful of food by themselves without giving it to others. One should not allow the defilement of a miserly mind to arise and entangle. Deeds of virtue and non-virtue done in the past will not be in vain. Relying on the wise will not be in vain. The good words spoken by the noble ones will not be in vain. Acts of gratitude and repaying kindness will not be in vain. The Blessed One spoke thus, and the bodhisattvas, the monks, and the world with gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. The End of "The Golden-Colored Past Deeds."
