The Blessed One was revered, honored, venerated, and offered service by monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, kings, great ministers, various heretics, ascetics, brahmins, wanderers, celestial beings, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, and great serpents. The Blessed One received robes, alms, bedding, medicines, and numerous sacred requisites offered by gods and humans, yet the Blessed One remained unattached to these offerings, like water that does not cling to a lotus. The nature of the Blessed One is vast, renowned for virtue, and exalted through voice and verse. The Blessed One is the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with wisdom and conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Guide, Teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One. Through direct realization, He fully knows the worlds of gods, māras, brahmins, ascetics, and humans, and He teaches the sublime Dharma: virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end, with profound meaning, pure in expression, untainted, complete, pure, and perfectly clear, guiding rightly. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks: “Monks, how have I taught about the fruits of giving and the rewards of generosity…” ============================================================

Just as one knows the ripening of an unripe fruit, so too should sentient beings understand the fruition of generosity and the maturation that comes from giving. Even this last morsel of food, do not eat it yourself without giving or sharing it with others. Do not let the stain of a miserly mind arise and cling tightly. Monks, because I understand the fruition of generosity and the maturation that comes from giving, but sentient beings do not understand the fruition of generosity and the maturation that comes from giving. Therefore, sentient beings, even this last morsel of food, eat it themselves without giving or sharing it with others, allowing the stain of a miserly mind to arise and cling tightly. What is the reason for this? Monks, in the past, there was a king named Golden Hue, who was handsome, beautiful, pleasing to the eye, had a good complexion, was prosperous, and possessed excellent qualities. That Golden Hue king was rich, possessed great wealth and great enjoyment, had many owners, much property and equipment, much wealth, grain, jewels, pearls, coral, gold, and silver, many elephants, horses, cattle, and mares, and storehouses and granaries filled to the brim. The palace of King Golden Hue was named Golden City, which was twelve yojanas long from east to west and seven yojanas wide from south to north, prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, fertile, delightful, and filled with people and multitudes. King Golden Hue had eighty thousand cities, prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, fertile, delightful, and filled with many people and multitudes. He had five million seven hundred thousand villages, prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, fertile, delightful, and filled with people and multitudes. He had sixty thousand valleys, prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, fertile, delightful, and filled with people and multitudes. King Golden Hue had eighty thousand ministers.

There were a thousand. There were twenty thousand women weavers. Then, King Golden Hue ruled the kingdom with the Dharma of a Dharma King, endowed with Dharma. King Golden Hue gave away everything, not even sparing the flesh of his own body. At that time, the lifespan of people reached eighty-four thousand years. At that time, at another time, King Golden Hue, alone in seclusion, entered into meditation, and the thought arose in his mind: I must ensure that all merchants do not pay the la-can and sho-gam taxes. And for all the people of Jambudvipa, I will not impose taxes and levies. Then, King Golden Hue summoned the astrologers, those belonging to the great ones, the ministers, the gatekeepers, and the attendants, and said this: From now on, all villagers and merchants shall not pay the la-can and sho-gam taxes. And for all the people of Jambudvipa, I will not impose taxes and levies. In this way, after ruling the kingdom for many years, at another time, a bad star appeared, causing no rain for twelve years. At that time, Brahmins who recited mantras, diviners, and fortune-tellers, having understood the signs of the stars and constellations of the earth and sky, and all the wandering stars, went to where King Golden Hue was and said to King Golden Hue: May the gods know! A bad star has appeared, causing no rain for twelve years. Then, King Golden Hue, having heard this announcement, wept bitterly, shedding tears, and said: Alas, my people of Jambudvipa! Alas, alas! My people of Jambudvipa! Alas, alas! My Jambudvipa, prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, with good harvests, joyful, and filled with beings and many people, will soon become empty and separated from people. Then, King Golden Hue, having ceased his grief and lamentation for a moment, thought to himself:
