The Tale of Moonbeam. The Tale of Moonbeam. In Sanskrit: Candra Prabha Avadānam. In Tibetan: The Tale of Moonbeam. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in the Kalanda Grove, the Radiant Garden of Rajagriha. When the venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana both completely passed into Nirvana in the realm of Nirvana without residue, the monks, having doubts, inquired of the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who dispels all doubts: Venerable One, it is unbearable that the two chief disciples, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, have passed into Nirvana. It is most wondrous that they have passed into Nirvana at the beginning of the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha! The Bhagavan said: Monks, when the two monks Shariputra and Maudgalyayana are free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, and liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil, what is so wondrous about the chief disciples passing into Nirvana, unbearable as it may be, at the beginning of the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha? In the past, even when Shariputra and Maudgalyayana were with desire, with hatred, with delusion, with birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil, they had unwavering faith in me. Unable to bear the sight of the chief disciples dying, they passed away. Having completely transcended all realms of desire, they were born in the world of Brahma. Listen to this! Monks, in the past, in the north, there was a royal palace called Stone Worthy, prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, bountiful, filled with many people and beings. It was twelve yojanas in circumference, twelve yojanas in width, square on all sides, extremely exquisite, and well-endowed with stables, windows, and high latticed windows.

The sounds of the lute, flute, drum, sweet sound, large drum, pottery drum, long drum, and conch shell are sure to resound. Monks, in that royal palace, there are the scents of tagara, agaru, sandalwood, powdered perfume, saffron, and fragrant flowers. At all times, various such fragrances are carried by the wind, rising and flowing in the roads, streets, crossroads, and intersections. Fully endowed with elephants, horses, chariots, and retinues of troops, vehicles, conveyances, streets, and great roads are beautifully adorned. Adorned like a celestial abode with umbrellas, banners, and flags raised, horse stables, windows, latticed windows, and half-moon decorations. Adorned with lakes, ponds, lotus ponds, springs, and waterfalls emerging from the Dragon King and the King of Mountains.
