They went to the place of No Sorrow. Then they bowed at the feet of the king, offered gifts, and sat down in front. Then King Ashoka showed them all the princes and asked, 'Merchants, have you ever seen anyone with such a distinctive appearance anywhere on your travels?' Then those merchants bowed with folded palms, prostrated at the king's feet, begged not to be blamed, and said to the king: 'O God, in our country there is a child named Handsome Youth, whose complexion surpasses that of humans, but has not yet attained the complexion of gods. When he was born, a jewel pond filled with divine scented water appeared, and a large pleasure garden full of abundant flowers and fruits that could walk came into being. Wherever that boy goes, that pond and pleasure garden will appear.' Then, King Ashoka, having heard this, was greatly amazed and desired to see it, so he sent a messenger, saying: 'King Ashoka desires to come and see Handsome Youth, so you should do whatever preparations are necessary.' Then, many ordinary people were frightened, thinking: 'If the king comes here with a large army, will it not cause a great disaster?' Then, they prepared the boy's fine steed and loaded a million pearl necklaces as gifts, and sent them to King Ashoka. They gradually went on and on, and went to the city of Pataliputra, and taking a million pearl necklaces, went to King Ashoka. Then, King Ashoka saw Handsome Youth's beautiful appearance, radiant complexion, divine pond, and pleasure garden, and was immediately greatly amazed. Then, King Ashoka, in order to show the wonder to the Elder Upagupta, took Handsome Youth and went to the poultry's Joyful Grove. In that Joyful Grove, eighty thousand Arhats, including the Elder Upagupta, resided. The learners and the virtuous ordinary individuals resided there in double that number. Then, he bowed at the feet of the Elder and listened to the Dharma.

Therefore, he sat in front. The elder Upagupta also taught him the Dharma. That boy was also one whose faculties were fully matured. Having heard the Dharma, he desired to be ordained. He requested King Ashoka and was ordained by the elder Upagupta. Through practice and effort, he realized that this wheel of the five-eyed cycle of existence is moving and unstable. He determined that all conditioned phenomena are by nature decaying, falling, scattering, and disintegrating. Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from desire for the three realms, possessed a mind of equanimity, regarding gold and clods of earth as equal, and the sky and the palm of his hand as indistinguishable. He became as cool as if soaked in sandalwood. He shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, and attained wisdom, clairvoyance, and individual self-awareness. He did not look to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence. He became an object of worship, remembrance, and respectful praise by the gods with their retinues. Then, King Ashoka, having developed doubts, asked the elder Upagupta: Venerable, what deeds did Handsome One perform to be endowed with such a beautiful form? What deeds did he perform to have a jewel pond filled with divine scented water, and a great garden with abundant flowers and fruits, and to be able to walk? The elder Upagupta said: Great King, Handsome One himself, in other past lives, accumulated merit and possessed complete conditions, appearing like a fierce animal. He performed and accumulated those deeds that would not be devoured by demons. How could anyone else experience the deeds that Handsome One himself performed and accumulated? Great King, the deeds performed and accumulated do not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor do they ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds performed and accumulated ripen only in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. The deeds of sentient beings, even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas,

ī za. When the gathering and the time are ripe, it will mature into a fruit. Great King, in the past, when the Blessed One passed into complete nirvana, the Venerable Mahākāśyapa, with five hundred attendants, was wandering in the country of Magadha, desiring to gather the Dharma correctly. At that time, a poor merchant saw that most of the monastic community of monks was overwhelmed with sorrow at the loss of their teacher, weary from walking, and their bodies covered with dust. Then, he felt compassion and invited Mahākāśyapa and the five hundred monks to a proper bath. Then, he offered warm water mixed with various perfumes and washed the bodies of the monks. He also washed their Dharma robes. He also satisfied them with good food, and after taking refuge and the precepts, he made a prayer: May I, in this very teaching of the Blessed One Shakyamuni, go forth and realize the state of an Arhat. Great King, what do you think? At that time, the poor merchant was this Bhikshu Mdzélden (Beautiful Face). Because he gave the monks a proper bath, he has become so extraordinarily beautiful, and he has come to know how to enter a jewel pond filled with divine scented water, and a great pleasure garden abundant with flowers and fruits. Because he took refuge and the precepts, he has realized the state of an Arhat in this very life. Great King, therefore, those deeds that are definitely black will definitely ripen into black results. Those deeds that are definitely white will definitely ripen into white results. Mixed deeds will ripen into mixed results. Great King, therefore, one should abandon those deeds that are definitely black and mixed deeds, and rely solely on those deeds that are definitely white. Great King, you should train yourself in this way. Then, King Ashoka praised what the Elder Upagupta had said, and afterwards
