If the Blessed One would allow me to be ordained, I would be ordained. After this request, the Blessed One said, "Welcome." After this pronouncement, his hair and beard fell off naturally, and he became a monk. Then, the Blessed One taught the Dharma appropriately, and immediately he exhausted all defilements and became an Arhat. Then, Ananda requested the Blessed One, saying, "Excellent! Blessed One, your work of benefiting sentient beings is inconceivable! What good deeds did this Brahmin do in the past to be free from all faults of wrongdoing, so that he can do things that benefit virtue, just like dyeing a clean white cloth easily?" The Blessed One said to Ananda, "This Brahmin is now only benefited by me, and made happy, but not only that, in the past, he was also freed from all faults, and what he did was made happy." Ananda requested, "Please explain in detail how you made this Brahmin happy in the past." The Blessed One said, "Listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you." Ananda requested, "As you say, I will listen." After this request, the Blessed One said this to Ananda: "In the past, beyond countless immeasurable eons, there was a king named Beautiful, who ruled the country according to the Dharma. At that time, there lived in that place a Brahmin named Wooden Staff, who was very poor, without food or clothing. He borrowed a cow from a patron, used it during the day, and then led the cow to the patron's house. At that time, the patron was eating, and Wooden Staff put the cow inside the house, and the cow ran out of another door and got lost. The patron finished eating and stood up, and did not see the cow, so he asked Wooden Staff where the cow was. He said, 'I put it in your house.' The patron said, 'You lost my cow, give it back to me!' He said, 'I didn't lose it.' Then, the two of them went together to the king, saying, 'Please distinguish between what is reasonable and unreasonable.' As the two of them were going, another person's mare ran away, and he said to Wooden Staff,

He said. He said, "Don't let the horse go." That person picked up a stone and threw it, hitting the horse's leg and breaking it. That person said, "You killed my horse, give me my horse!". Why should that person give the horse? That person said, "Come! We will go to the king, and let the judge decide." Saying this, they went there. That person with the stick started to run away, he jumped onto a wall, and next to him there was a weaver weaving cloth, he fell on the weaver, and the weaver died. The weaver's wife grabbed the person with the stick, and said, "You killed my husband, give me my husband!". That person said, "How can I give you your husband?" Saying this, "Come! We will go to the king, and let the judge decide." As they were walking, in the middle of the road there was a very deep river. A carpenter was coming from the river carrying an axe. The person with the stick asked him, "How deep is the river?" The carpenter said, "The river is deep." The axe fell into the river, and could not be found. That person grabbed the person with the stick, and said, "You threw my axe into the river!". That person said, "I didn't throw it!" "Come! We will go to the king, and let the judge decide." Saying this, they went. That person was tired, so he went to the tavern, and asked for wine. The tavern owner gave birth to a boy, covered him with cloth, and was sleeping. The person with the stick sat on top of him, and the boy died. She also grabbed the person with the stick, and said, "You killed my son, give me my son!". That person said, "I didn't kill him, how can I give you your son?" She said, "Come! We will go to the king, and let the judge decide." Saying this, they were walking, in another place, on a Shakotaka tree there was a crow, it saw the person with the stick, and said, "Where are you going?" That person said, "I am not going, these people are taking me." "Taking you where?" "To the king." "Then, please give a message to the king for me. Report to the king, this place, on this Shakotaka tree there is a crow, when I am on other trees my voice is not pleasant, but when I come to this tree it is very wonderful."
