Chapter Thirty-Five: The Chapter on the King's Eyes Opening. Chapter Thirty-Five: The Chapter on the King's Eyes Opening. Tenth Volume. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, at Anathapindika's monastery. He was teaching the sacred Dharma to many people. At that time, all the people of the city were setting out to listen to the Dharma. In that city, there was a blind Brahmin sitting by the roadside. Seeing many people passing by, he asked, "Where are you hurrying to?" The people said, "Have you not heard? The Tathagata has appeared in the world and is now dwelling in this place, teaching the Dharma. It is very rare for a Tathagata to appear in the world and to encounter him. We are going to listen to the Dharma from the Buddha." That Brahmin was very skilled in eight kinds of voices. Just by hearing a sound, he could discern power and lifespan. What are the eight? They are the voice like a sparrow, the voice like a crow, a shrill, piercing voice, the voice like an elephant, the voice like a drum, the voice like a dragon, the voice like a bell, and the voice like Brahma. Speaking with a voice like a sparrow means being shameless and ungrateful. Speaking with a voice like a crow means being angry, fierce, delighting in killing, and without compassion. A shrill, piercing voice means a man speaking in a woman's voice, or a woman speaking in a man's voice. Such a person has no power, is poor, and is base. Speaking with a voice like an elephant means being naturally upright and thinking of benefiting spiritual friends. Speaking with a voice like a drum means being skilled in speech, having quick intelligence, retaining knowledge, and being relied upon by the king. Speaking with a voice like a dragon means possessing wise intellect and being skilled in Dharma. Speaking with a voice like a bell means being rich, enjoying abundance, and possessing many hundreds of thousands of gold coins. Speaking with a voice like Brahma means possessing great merit and power. If staying at home, one becomes a Chakravartin king; if going forth, one will undoubtedly attain enlightenment. At that time, that Brahmin said to the people, "I am very skilled in voices. If he is truly a perfectly enlightened Buddha, he must have the voice of Brahma. Take me along too."

And so they went. They also led that blind Brahmin, and as they went on and on, when they came near that direction, they heard the voice of the Buddha speaking, and the blind man rejoiced and was filled with joy, and faith arose in him. His two eyes opened naturally, and he saw the Buddha's body was golden in color, adorned with the thirty-two marks, and as bright as the light of the sun. He bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and immeasurable joy arose in him. The Blessed One taught him the Dharma, and he generated joy, and twenty trillion of his sinful and unwholesome actions were exhausted, and he obtained the fruit of stream-entry, and he became endowed with the eye of wisdom, and he requested to be ordained. Then, the Blessed One said, "Welcome," and he became a bhikshu, and he taught him the Dharma accordingly, and he became an arhat. Many of the retinue were in doubt, and the venerable Ananda rose from his seat, folded his palms, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, you perform the benefit of many sentient beings, and among all those who can be tamed, you are especially compassionate to this blind Brahmin. This blind Brahmin has obtained both the physical eye and the eye of wisdom. The Blessed One said to Ananda: Giving eyes to this blind Brahmin is not only at this time, but also in the past. Ananda said: Blessed One, please explain in detail how you gave eyes in the past. The Blessed One said: In the past, countless, immeasurable, and inconceivable eons ago, in this Jambudvipa, there was a place called Pugalada, and there was a king called Open-Eye. That king could penetrate rocks and walls without obstruction, and see up to forty yojanas, so he was called Open-Eye. He ruled over all eighty-four thousand small kingdoms of Jambudvipa. That king had twenty thousand consorts and palace maids, and five hundred princes. The crown prince was called Discipline-Good. That king performed the duties of a king according to the Dharma, and he regarded all sentient beings as if they were his only child, avoiding wind and rain.
