One does not become attached to lands everywhere. Even if one has happiness and suffering, one never abandons the meaning of the Dharma. A wise person does not become a deceitful person, nor does one become ignorant, speak harshly, or become angry. One does not grieve in a state of poverty, hoping that others will hit the mark. One is not like inferior people who are too extreme or too dejected, but relies on the middle ground. This is the characteristic of the wise. Being too extreme always leads to enmity, and being too dejected always leads to contempt. Therefore, having abandoned these two, one should rely on the middle position. Sometimes be like a mute or a deaf person. When the time is right, speak like a landowner. Sometimes be cool like a snow mountain. When the time is right, blaze like a flame. Sometimes be humble like grass. When the time is right, be like Mount Meru. Sometimes become like a king. When the time is right, go into the forest like a Muni (Shakyamuni). Sometimes endure hunger and thirst. When the time is right, accept happiness and suffering. Do not be used like a slave for the sake of wealth, nor be controlled by anger. Sometimes, with joyful songs and musical instruments, play and enjoy meat and alcohol. Sometimes flee in fear like a mountain deer. When the time is right, display prowess like a predator. First, examine the time and non-time, whether you are strong or weak, prosperous or declining. Then, begin to act well. Be patient with those who cannot be patient, and be patient even with those who can be patient. Be patient with the weak, and always be patient with the strong. Enmity never subsides with enmity, so it is better to be patient even with those who cannot be patient. Always give love to those who are angry, and always conceal the faults of others. Endure the words of leaders out of fear, and endure the words of adversaries because of strife. Whoever endures the words of subordinates, the holy ones say that is the श्रेष्ठ (Sanskrit Devanagari: श्रेष्ठ, Sanskrit Romanization: śreṣṭha, Chinese literal meaning: best) of patience. Small-minded people cannot endure insults, mockery, and harsh words, just as lotus flowers cannot endure hailstones. Wise people can endure insults, mockery, and harsh words very well, like elephants.
