Laziness and moderation in food, striving after not sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, and delighting in solitude and discriminatingly contemplating things as they are. O you who have life, these twenty-two abodes should be repeatedly examined by one who has gone forth. "I have abandoned the signs of a householder, which are unattractive," this abode should be repeatedly examined by one who has gone forth. I have undertaken to be different; my appearance and actions are different. My livelihood depends on others; as long as I live, I will be like this: robes, alms, bedding, medicine for the sick, and utensils must be sought from others. I have turned away from the desires of people for as long as I live. I have turned away from the playful joys of people for as long as I live. Have I not reproached myself with discipline? Have I not been reproached by those who practice the pure life, by the wise, with the nature of dharma? Do I conduct myself without self-reproach and without decline? Do I eat the alms of the countryside meaningfully? Do I rejoice alone in an empty pleasure garden? How do I spend my days and nights? Is my mind fully engaged, delighted, abiding, and liberated in the cessation of all formations, aiming at emptiness, the exhaustion of craving, and the desireless, passionless nirvana? Is my mind fully engaged, delighted, abiding, and liberated in the impermanence of the aggregates, the nourishment of the aggregates, and the meaninglessness of the aggregates? When I am about to die, if those who practice the pure life, the wise, ask me, will I be able to prophesy correctly without fear or anxiety, and will I attain any of the four fruits of a mendicant? I am of the nature of birth, not having transcended the nature of birth, of the nature of aging, of the nature of sickness, of the nature of death, and I will be separated from all that is desired, disliked, loved, and pleasing.

It becomes a state of being without, separated from, and not possessing. I should take ownership of karma, and be firm in the place of karma's origin and in the enjoyment of karma's share. Whatever virtuous or non-virtuous actions I perform, I will become the owner of those very actions. As an ordained person, one should repeatedly contemplate these points. By repeatedly and individually contemplating these twenty-two places, one will perfect the notion of a renunciate. When the notion of a renunciate is perfected, the seven notions will also be perfected: constantly and continuously practicing, continuously entering, being without greed and hatred, having correct mindfulness, being without pride, and perfecting the means of livelihood for the sake of attaining meditative stabilization. Venerable ones, whatever mind, intellect, or consciousness that clings to forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects for a long time, and is accumulated and closely accumulated by forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects, through individual examination, it will not be established as approaching the realm of immortality. Venerable ones, an ordinary person should make the mind weary in twenty ways: I accumulate through realization, I will die untamed, I will fall into a precipice, I will go to a fearful place, I do not know the fearless place, I do not know karma, I have not attained meditative stabilization, rebirth is suffering, obtaining leisure and endowments is difficult, I am constantly bound by the killing of desire, I have not transcended cyclic existence, I am not completely liberated from the lower realms, I am not in accordance with immeasurable and correct views, I have not prevented myself from committing the deeds of immediate retribution, I have not ended the beginningless and endless cycle of birth. If it is not ended, there is no other agent. If it is not ended, there is no nature of happiness. Actions that have been done are not in vain. I will face the time of death in ignorance and unskillfulness, so an ordinary person should think.
