Having a gentle disposition, having a wise mind, having pleasant speech, listening respectfully, inquiring completely, listening to the true Dharma, constantly practicing the true Dharma, and generating aversion to things that should be loathed. Likewise, properly attending to all aversions as well. By abandoning all non-virtuous dharmas, properly establishing all virtuous dharmas. Purifying them, gaining mastery over samadhi, and also properly attending to them. Venerable ones, the noble Shravaka, with such correct and proper attention, should cultivate these ten perceptions: the perception of impurity, the perception of impermanence, the perception of suffering in impermanence, the perception of no-self in suffering, the perception of revulsion towards food, the perception of displeasure towards all the world, the perception of light, the perception of detachment, the perception of cessation, and the perception of death. Venerable ones, there are fourteen dharmas that obstruct the perception of impurity, namely: dwelling with women, looking at women with a distracted mind, being heedless, having strong desire. Pursuing beautiful signs, not distinguishing impurity, associating with people engaged in worldly affairs. Being in harmony with them, not listening respectfully, not inquiring completely, not guarding the doors of the senses, not knowing the measure of food, not delighting in solitary places, and not distinguishing things as they are. What obstructs the perception of impermanence is attachment to conditioned phenomena. There are six dharmas that obstruct the perception of suffering in impermanence, namely: laziness, regret, forgetfulness, heedlessness, lack of diligence, and not distinguishing things as they are. What obstructs the perception of no-self in suffering is clinging to self. What obstructs the perception of revulsion towards food is craving for flavors. What obstructs the perception of displeasure towards all the world is desire and attachment to the various things of the world.

O! There are eleven things that interrupt the perception of appearance, namely: doubt, non-attention, poor posture of the body, sleep, drowsiness, excessive diligence, excessive laziness, joy, lack of confidence, various thoughts, excessive talkativeness, and attachment to various forms. What interrupts the perception of detachment from desire is universal desire. What interrupts the perception of cessation is following the characteristics of the Dharma. What interrupts the perception of death is clinging to life. O long-lived ones, if you cherish these three dharmas, abandon desire, and abide in them, then those obstacles that have not been destroyed will be completely destroyed. O long-lived ones, there are fourteen dharmas that cherish the perception of ugliness, namely: not living with women, observing women with mindfulness, being cautious, reducing desire, not striving after ugly characteristics, separately contemplating ugliness, not associating with people engaged in worldly affairs, not conforming to them, listening respectfully, asking thoroughly, guarding the doors of the senses, knowing the measure of food, delighting in solitude, and separately contemplating things as they are. O long-lived ones, if you constantly cultivate the perception of ugliness, you will abandon attachment to desire. If you constantly cultivate the perception of impermanence, you will abandon formations. If you constantly cultivate the perception of impermanence as suffering, you will abandon laziness and regret. If you constantly cultivate the perception of suffering as selflessness, you will abandon the view of self. If you constantly cultivate the perception of food as unsuitable, you will abandon craving for taste. If you constantly cultivate the perception of displeasure with all the world, you will abandon desire and attachment to the various things of the world. Constantly

If you practice meditation and repeatedly familiarize yourself with it, you will realize wisdom. If you constantly practice the perception of detachment from desire and repeatedly familiarize yourself with it, you will universally abandon desire. If you constantly practice the perception of cessation and repeatedly familiarize yourself with it, you will exhaust the aggregates. If you constantly practice the perception of death and repeatedly familiarize yourself with it, you will abandon attachment to life. Venerable ones, the noble disciples who thus properly apply their minds have twenty qualities that are obstacles. What are the twenty? They are: not being diligent, associating with those who are not diligent, not inquiring thoroughly, not conforming to the teachings, being as dull as sheep, being full of desire, having many affairs, having done the end of work poorly, having abandoned diligence, being afraid when hearing of obstacles, being arrogant, not conforming, being forgetful, being heedless, not dwelling in a place, not guarding the doors of the senses, not knowing the measure of food, not striving to avoid sleeping during the first and last watches of the night, not delighting in solitude, and not individually reflecting on things as they are. Venerable ones, there are eleven cherished qualities that, when the obstacles that have not been overcome are properly overcome, will lead to their complete destruction. What are the eleven? They are: obtaining desire, seeing benefit, being exceedingly joyful, giving, conquering, following the signs of the teachings, not despising oneself, listening respectfully, inquiring thoroughly, delighting in solitude, and individually reflecting on things as they are.
