ceases. With the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease. With the cessation of name and form, the six sense sources cease. With the cessation of the six sense sources, contact ceases. With the cessation of contact, feeling ceases. With the cessation of feeling, craving ceases. With the cessation of craving, grasping ceases. With the cessation of grasping, becoming ceases. With the cessation of becoming, birth ceases. With the cessation of birth, aging and death, as well as sorrow, lamentation, crying out in distress, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil all cease. Thus, this entire great mass of suffering ceases. Monks, thus all conditioned things are suffering, and nirvana is peace. From the arising of causes, suffering arises. From the cessation of causes, suffering ceases, and the continuity of the path is cut off, not arising, without connection, and ceasing completely. The end of suffering is just like that. Monks, in this, whoever is suffering, that ceases, that is pacified, that is cooled, that is extinguished. Who else is completely liberated from suffering? Monks, it is like this: abandoning all aggregates, craving is exhausted, free from attachment, cessation. This state of nirvana is peaceful. Then, the Blessed One spoke again twice to King Bimbisara of Magadha, who was skilled in crafts and had a formed heart: Great King, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent? The king replied: Venerable one, it is impermanent. The Blessed One said: Great King, whatever is impermanent, is that suffering? Or is it not suffering? The king replied: Venerable one, it is suffering. The Blessed One said: Great King, then, whatever is impermanent, is suffering, and is subject to change, would a noble disciple who has heard the teachings regard it as 'This is mine, this is I, this is my self'? The king replied: Venerable one, no. The Blessed One said: Great King, what do you think? Are feeling, perception, volitions, and consciousness permanent?

"Ah, do you think it is impermanent?" The king replied, "Yes, venerable one, it is impermanent." The Blessed One declared, "Great King, is that which is impermanent suffering?" "It is not suffering." The king replied, "Yes, venerable one, it is suffering." The Blessed One declared, "Great King, then, would a noble disciple who is learned and endowed with hearing, regard that which is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change as 'This is mine, this is I, this is my self,' and cling to it as self?" The king replied, "No, venerable one." The Blessed One declared, "Great King, therefore, whatever form, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, beautiful or ugly, far or near, all of them should be viewed with correct wisdom as 'This is not mine, this is not I, this is not my self.' Feelings, perceptions, volitional formations, and whatever consciousness, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, beautiful or ugly, far or near, all of them should be viewed with correct wisdom as 'This is not mine, this is not I, this is not my self.' Great King, a noble disciple who is learned and endowed with hearing, who sees in this way, will also become weary of form, and will also become weary of feelings, perceptions, volitional formations, and consciousness. Being weary, he becomes dispassionate. Being dispassionate, he becomes liberated. With liberation, he knows and sees, 'Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more coming to this state of being.' When this discourse on the Dharma was being spoken, the king of the Magadha country (Magadha, one of the sixteen great kingdoms of ancient India, roughly in the southern part of present-day Bihar), Skilled Craftsman Firm Form, eighty thousand gods, and the Brahmins and countless householders of the Magadha country, all attained the Dharma.

In them arose the stainless, immaculate eye of the Dharma. Then, the king of Magadha, Skilled in Craft, Firm Heart (Bimbisara), saw the Dharma, attained the Dharma, realized the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended hesitation, transcended doubt, did not rely on others, was not swayed by others, and having gained fearlessness in the teachings of the Teacher, rose from his seat, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with palms joined, bowed towards the Blessed One and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, I have entered (the Dharma). I have entered (the Dharma). I go for refuge to the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Please, Blessed One, from this day forth, as long as I live, regard me as a lay follower who has abandoned killing and other evil deeds, who has taken refuge, and who has generated faith. I wish to honor the Blessed One and the Sangha with robes, alms, bedding, seats, and medicine for the sick, as long as I live. Would the Blessed One allow me to go to Rajagriha?" The Blessed One did not say anything to the king of Magadha, Skilled in Craft, Firm Heart, thereby granting permission. Then, the king of Magadha, Skilled in Craft, Firm Heart, knowing that the Blessed One's silence meant permission, greatly praised and rejoiced in the Blessed One's teachings, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then departed from the presence of the Blessed One. The Great Sutra, "Welcoming of Firm Heart," is complete.
