He stayed there. Then, the Brahmins and householders of Magadha thought to themselves: "The great ascetic is not practicing the pure life in the presence of the Jaṭilas, the naked ascetics, and the Ādityarakṣitas, but the Jaṭilas, the naked ascetics, and the Ādityarakṣitas themselves are practicing the pure life in the presence of the great ascetic." Then, the Blessed One spoke to King Bimbisāra Śreṇi Cittamati of Magadha: "Great King, form is neither born nor destroyed, and its birth and destruction should be understood. Great King, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are neither born nor destroyed, and their birth and destruction should be understood. Great King, a son of good family who understands the nature of the birth and destruction of form has fully understood form. Great King, a son of good family who understands the nature of the birth and destruction of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness has fully understood consciousness. Great King, a son of good family who has fully understood form does not claim 'I' and 'mine,' does not cling, does not have excessive attachment, and does not manifestly cling. Great King, a son of good family who has fully understood feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness does not claim 'I' and 'mine,' does not cling, does not particularly abide, and does not manifestly cling. Great King, a son of good family who does not make form his own, does not claim, does not cling, does not particularly abide, and does not manifestly cling is immeasurable and countless, and I say that he is liberated from suffering. Great King, a son of good family who does not make feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness his own, does not claim, does not cling, does not particularly abide, and does not manifestly cling is immeasurable and countless, and I say that he is liberated from suffering." Then, the Brahmins and householders of Magadha thought to themselves:

Hey! If form is not self, and feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are also not self, then what is it that has never happened, will not happen, and does not exist now either, and what is it that in that and those does good and bad deeds, and individually experiences the ripening results of the deeds done, and what is it that abandons this aggregate and connects with another aggregate, is it the self? Is it a sentient being? Is it life? Is it birth? Is it nourishment? Is it a person? Is it born of strength? Is it a son of strength? Is it the doer? Is it the one who makes do? Is it the producer? Is it the all-producer? Is it the persuader? Is it the all-persuader? Is it the speaker? Is it the experiencer? Is it the individual experiencer, what is that? Thus he thought. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the minds of the Brahmins and householders of the country of Magadha, spoke to the monks: Monks, the unlearned common people follow after the designation of "I, I," and for them there is no self or what belongs to self. Monks, this suffering arises when it arises, and ceases when it ceases. Formations arise when they arise, and formations cease when they cease, and relying on those causes and those conditions, the continuum of sentient beings' formations arises. Monks, the Tathagata, having understood the connection of the continuum of formations, designates the death and birth of sentient beings. Monks, with the pure divine eye, far surpassing the human eye, I see sentient beings dying and being born, those of good color and those of bad color, those who are inferior and those who are superior, those who go to good destinies and those who go to bad destinies. These sentient beings who possess knowledge, who are endowed with evil conduct of body, speech, and mind, who slander the noble ones, who are endowed with wrong views, by the karma of wrong views and the cause of truly upholding the Dharma, after the destruction of the body at death, by that cause and condition, fall into evil destinies, evil paths, and wrong views, and are born in the hells of sentient beings.

Moreover, sentient beings endowed with consciousness, these are those who are endowed with good conduct of body, good conduct of speech and mind, do not slander the noble ones, and possess right view. Through the karma of right view and the cause of correctly upholding the Dharma, after the body is destroyed and death occurs, by that cause and that condition, they will be born among the gods in the world of bliss and heaven. Those who approach beings as they are, also fully know them as they are. Monks, because I know and see in this way, I do not say that I am something that has never happened, will not happen, and does not exist now, and that in those things, I experience separately the ripening of good and evil deeds that have been done, and that abandoning this aggregate and connecting with another aggregate, other than the designation of Dharma, is a self, or a sentient being, or a life, or a birth, or a nurture, or a person, or born of power, or a son of power, or a doer, or a causer to do, or a producer, or an all-producer, or an instigator, or an all-instigator, or a speaker, or an experiencer, or a separate experiencer. Therefore, the designation of Dharma is this: that this arises because this exists, and this is born because this is born. For example, due to ignorance, there are formations; due to formations, there is consciousness; due to consciousness, there are name and form; due to name and form, there are six sense sources; due to six sense sources, there is contact; due to contact, there is feeling; due to feeling, there is craving; due to craving, there is grasping; due to grasping, there is becoming; due to becoming, there is birth; due to birth, there are aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and disturbances. In this way, this great mass of suffering will arise. For example, this does not arise because this does not exist, and this ceases because this ceases. For example, when ignorance ceases, formations cease; when formations cease, consciousness ceases.
