Thus I have heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagriha, in the grove of Radiant Light, at the place of Kalandaka. He was surrounded and gazed upon by countless, immeasurable, and inexpressible Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who had come there from countless, immeasurable other Buddha-fields in the ten directions. Likewise, he was surrounded and gazed upon by countless, immeasurable, and inexpressible great Shravakas who had gathered there from other Buddha-fields in the ten directions. Similarly, countless, immeasurable, and inexpressible lords such as Indra, Brahma, the gods, the Nagas, the Yakshas, the Gandharvas, the Asuras, the Garudas, the Kinnaras, and the Mahoragas, who had come here from other Buddha-fields in the ten directions, filled all the Buddha-fields of the Sahā world, the paths of those who travel on earth and in the sky. Likewise, countless, immeasurable other gods who dwell in the desire realm and the form realm, as well as Nagas, Yakshas, Rakshasas, Asuras, Garudas, Kinnaras, and Mahoragas, also came and gazed up at the Blessed One. The Blessed One would soon teach the ultimate consummation, appearing like the sky, clearly distinguishing the conduct of the Bodhisattvas, the in-and-out breathing, the recollection of the elements, the gate of immortality, and the prophecy of the Brahma-viharas. They sat silently, and the entire Buddha-field of the Sahā world was filled with all

Everything was filled with the paths of earth and sky. Yet, they were not satisfied by the giver of the rain of the Dharma of the Bhagavan, and with their palms joined together, they sat gazing only at the Bhagavan, just as the sick look to the doctor, just as those covered by darkness look to the light, just as those carried away by the flood look to the riverbank, just as those who have become miserable look to the protector. Likewise, all the Buddha-fields of this world, the paths of earth and sky, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, the Shravakas, from the rulers of Indra to the rulers of the great belly-crawlers, and the other gods who abide in desire and abide in form, up to the various humans and non-humans, gazed at the Bhagavan, the possessor of Dharma, the King of Dharma, and with their palms joined together, they sat silently. At that time, the Great Brahma named Lotus Blaze of Glory, who had performed superior deeds for many Buddhas, generated roots of virtue, was non-returning from the Unsurpassed Perfectly Complete Enlightenment, and had thoroughly cultivated love focused on the Dharma. Then, the Great Brahma Lotus Blaze of Glory rose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with his palms joined together, bowed down in the direction of the Bhagavan. With these verses, he requested the Bhagavan to teach the Dharma: Having gone far away, possessing a swift stream, Making exhaustion the main thing, unmoving, radiant, You are the one who causes all realizations to arise, You are skilled in knowing the scriptures, peaceful, and the way of the stars. You know the remembrance of breathing and arising, Possessing the four Brahma abodes, In order to purify the three realms, You are the one who abandons sentient beings' wandering. You possess the wisdom of being endowed with a single mode, Even tens of thousands of gods and humans, You overcome stinginess, attain virtue, and cross the river, You are the possessor of swift knowledge of the happy realms. The conduct of enlightenment and the Buddha's Dharma are manifest, Some sentient beings whose minds waver fall into the river of desire, Covered by darkness and not possessing eyes, All suffering has been destroyed by you, Unheard of
