The Chapter Called 'Noble Steadfastness of Excellent Thought,' also known as the Great Vehicle Sutra. The Chapter Called 'Noble Steadfastness of Excellent Thought,' also known as the Great Vehicle Sutra. In Sanskrit: Ārya Sthira Adhyāśaya Parivartana Nāma Mahāyāna Sūtra. In Tibetan: The Chapter Called 'Noble Steadfastness of Excellent Thought,' also known as the Great Vehicle Sutra. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Bhagavan was dwelling in Rajagriha on Vulture Peak Mountain, together with a great Sangha of monks consisting of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, and about five hundred Bodhisattvas. At that time, the Bodhisattva Steadfastness of Excellent Thought, early in the morning, first put on his undergarment and Dharma robes, and carrying his alms bowl, went to Rajagriha for alms. Then, as the Bodhisattva Steadfastness of Excellent Thought was walking sequentially through the great city of Rajagriha for alms, he saw in the house of a merchant a daughter who was beautiful in form, lovely, pleasing to behold, with excellent and radiant complexion, endowed with the best qualities. Having seen that daughter, he developed a burning J,V,P༻ with desire. He thought, 'I should focus on impurity.' However, his mind was completely seized by the aspect of impurity. Then, the Bodhisattva Steadfastness of Excellent Thought, with a mind clinging to joy, did not take alms from that house, but returned from the city of Rajagriha with an empty alms bowl, striving to avoid thinking about that thought of desire. However, even with the power of discriminating analysis, he was unable to dispel the thought of desire. Then, the Bhagavan, with his pure divine eye that transcends human capabilities, saw that the Bodhisattva Steadfastness of Excellent Thought was possessed by the thought of desire, and that even with the power of discriminating analysis, he was unable to dispel the thought of desire. Then, the Bhagavan, in order to tame the Bodhisattva Steadfastness of Excellent Thought, emanated a daughter exactly like the merchant's daughter on the path where the Bodhisattva Steadfastness of Excellent Thought was walking. The Bodhisattva Steadfastness of Excellent Thought

He saw the emanation girl. Having seen her, he spoke thus: "Daughter of lineage, where are you going?" The emanation girl said: "Wherever you go, I will go there." Then, the Bodhisattva Superior Intention Steadfast, feeling fear and dread, fled. Having fled, he went to a mountain that was difficult to traverse. That emanation girl also went to that very mountain that was difficult to traverse. Then, the Bodhisattva Superior Intention Steadfast, his body exhausted, sat down. That emanation girl also sat down in front of the Bodhisattva Superior Intention Steadfast. Having sat down, she spoke this verse: "Please abandon me with your mind, what is the use of fleeing with the body? Steadfast one, fleeing with the body will not make you abandon desire." Then, after the emanation girl spoke that verse, she fell from that mountain that was difficult to traverse. Having fallen, her head went to one side, her hand also to one side, her foot also to one side, her limbs and minor limbs also went to one side, like snow that is held melting and dissolving and seeping into the ground, that emanation girl, disappeared right there. Then, the Bodhisattva Superior

From the ground, the Blessed One Galava, with palms joined and raised, supplicated the Blessed One regarding all natures. The Blessed One declared: 'Son of good family, whatever arises by way, to seek it completely in that way is thus. Son of good family, the Thus-gone One has not said that he has abandoned desire by abandoning the dharmas that cause attachment. Similarly, by abandoning the dharmas that cause anger and delusion, the Thus-gone One has not said that he has abandoned delusion.' Why is that? Son of good family, the Thus-gone One does not teach the Dharma in order to abandon any Dharma or to attain any Dharma. He does not teach the Dharma for the sake of completely knowing, completely abandoning, meditating, making manifest, realizing, moving out of samsara, going to nirvana, eliminating, abiding, or distinguishing. Son of good family, distinguishing into two is not the nature of the Thus-gone Ones. Whatever acts in duality are not those who have entered the right path. Son of good family, what are the two? 'I shall abandon desire,' this is duality. 'I shall abandon hatred,' 'I shall abandon delusion,' this is duality. Thus, whatever effort is made is not entering the right path, but is called entering the wrong path. Son of good family, for example, when someone watches a magician's performance, if he sees a woman conjured by the magician, he generates a mind of desire. He is tormented by the mind of desire, feels ashamed and afraid, and gets up from his seat and leaves. After he leaves, he contemplates the impurity of that very woman, and contemplates impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Son of good family, what do you think? Is that person entering the right path, or is he entering the wrong path?' He replied: 'Blessed One, for a woman who does not exist, to contemplate impurity, and to contemplate impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, that person's effort is wrong.' Blessed One,
