The Sutra of the Great Vehicle, Called "The Questions of the Holy Old Woman" The Sutra of the Great Vehicle, Called "The Questions of the Holy Old Woman" In Indian language: Arya-maha-lali-ka-pari-prccha-nama-mahayana-sutra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Great Vehicle, Called "The Questions of the Holy Old Woman". Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus I have heard: At one time, the Bhagavan, while wandering in the country of Vijina, together with a great Sangha of monks consisting of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, and a great multitude of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, went to the place called Galava in the great city of Vaishali. At that time, an old woman from the city, aged, decrepit, and past her prime, one hundred and twenty years old since birth, was gathering grass in the monastery. That woman saw the Bhagavan, beautiful, pleasing, with subdued senses, subdued mind, having attained the supreme state of subduing and pacification, concealed, without fault, with subdued senses, like the ocean, calm and clear without turbidity, appearing sublime like a golden stupa, radiant with glory, shining, bright, well-adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great man, coming from afar. Having seen him, her mind became faithful, and with a faithful mind, she went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, she bowed her head at the feet of the Bhagavan, circumambulated the Bhagavan three times, and then sat down on one side. That woman, with her palms joined together, bowed down to where the Bhagavan was, and said this to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, from where does birth come? From where does aging come? Where is it? Bhagavan, from where does sickness come? From where does death come? Where is it? Bhagavan, from where does form come? Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, from where do they come? Where are they? Bhagavan, from where does the earth element come? The water element, the fire element, the wind element, the space element, and the consciousness element, from where do they come? Where are they? Bhagavan, from where does the eye come? The ear, the nose, the tongue, the body, and the mind, from where do they come? Where are they? The Bhagavan spoke:

Sister, birth does not come from anywhere, old age does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Sister, sickness does not come from anywhere, death does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Sister, form does not come from anywhere, nor do feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness come from anywhere, nor do they go anywhere. Sister, the earth element does not come from anywhere, nor do the water element, fire element, wind element, space element, and consciousness element come from anywhere, nor do they go anywhere. Sister, the eye does not come from anywhere, nor do the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind come from anywhere, nor do they go anywhere. Sister, it is like this: for example, relying on a fire drill and a fire board, and also relying on the effort of the person who generates it, fire arises. That fire, after burning the grass and wood, becomes without fuel and dies. Sister, what do you think? Where does that fire come from? Where did it go? She replied: Blessed One, that fire arises due to the power of aggregation, and ceases and dies due to the separation of aggregation. The Buddha said: Sister, likewise, all phenomena arise due to the power of aggregation, and cease due to the separation of aggregation. Therefore, no phenomenon comes from anywhere or goes anywhere. Sister, it is like this: relying on the eye and form, eye consciousness arises, but that eye consciousness has no producer, no cessation, and no going anywhere, etc. It does not come or go from any aggregate, and by the cause of whose consciousness, karma is manifestly accumulated, and in the three realms, the fruit is shown closely by three kinds of fruit. That fruit is also empty, without coming, without going, not produced by anyone, not stopped by anyone. Sister, all phenomena are extinguished by their own nature. Likewise, relying on the ear and sound, the nose and smell, the tongue and taste, the body and touch, the mind and phenomena, mind consciousness arises, but that mind consciousness has no producer, no cessation, and no going anywhere, etc. It does not come or go from any aggregate, and the cause of mind consciousness
