With that prophecy, I shall gladden your heart. Then, as I created the opportunity, the ruler of the Sahā world, Brahmā, entreated me thus: "Bhagavan, with how many dharmas do Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas become swiftly awakened to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment?" Monks, after that entreaty, I spoke thus to the ruler of the Sahā world, Brahmā: "Brahmā, Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas, if they possess one dharma, will swiftly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment." What is that one dharma? It is mindfulness directed towards the body. Monks, I have shown to that Brahmā, the ruler of the Sahā world, the cause, action, and result of mindfulness directed towards the body. Then, the venerable Ānanda said this to the Bhagavan: "Excellent, excellent! What the Bhagavan has shown to Brahmā, the ruler of the Sahā world, is for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, and for the sake of the benefit, happiness, and well-being of gods and humans. Please explain it for the sake of the newly ordained monks, those who have not been ordained for long in this Dharma-Vinaya, and those noble beings who have truly entered the Mahāyāna, so that they may rejoice upon hearing it and gain faith, and diligently strive to apply themselves to what has been taught." Then, the Bhagavan also explained to those monks what he had said to Brahmā, the ruler of the Sahā world. Then, the venerable Ānanda said this to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, you have spoken well! Sugata, you have spoken well! It is well said, excellent, that Brahmā, the ruler of the Sahā world, came to the Bhagavan to inquire about such sūtras in their entirety." Bhagavan, even if Brahmā, the ruler of the Sahā world, had no other roots of virtue, by this root of virtue alone, arising from the very act of inquiring, he would swiftly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Why is that? Bhagavan,

So that all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot fathom the limits and extent of that profound root. Why is that? World Honored One, this request made by Brahma, the lord of the Saha world, is for the common benefit of all sentient beings. The World Honored One said: Kungawo, it is so, it is so. Then, the venerable Kungawo said to the World Honored One: World Honored One, what is the name of this Dharma discourse? How should we uphold it? The World Honored One said: Kungawo, therefore, you should uphold this as 'The Brahma's Request.' You should also uphold it as 'Teaching the Method of Mindfulness.' You should also uphold it as 'Teaching the Method of Vigilance.' After the World Honored One spoke thus, the venerable Kungawo, and those monks, and those Bodhisattvas, and all the complete retinues, and the world with gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas rejoiced and praised what the World Honored One had said. The Mahayana Sutra 'The Noble Brahma's Request' is complete. The Indian Abbot Jinamitra and the revising translator Bande Yeshede translated, revised, and finalized it.
