The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra "Questions of the Dragon King Sāgara" The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra "Questions of the Dragon King Sāgara" In Sanskrit: Ārya Sāgara Nāga rāja paripṛcchā nāma mahāyāna sūtra. In Tibetan: The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra "Questions of the Dragon King Sāgara". Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the great ocean, in the abode of the Dragon King Sāgara, in the courtyard of the retinue of the Dragon King Sāgara. Together with a great Saṅgha of eight thousand monks, and numerous Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas who had gathered from the ten directions of the world, possessing abundant supernormal knowledge, as well as Indra, Brahmā, the world protectors, gods, nāgas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and many billions of hundreds of thousands of koṭis of large belly-crawlers. Then, the Blessed One, knowing that the retinue endowed with all qualities had gathered, spoke to the Dragon King Sāgara: "O Lord of the Nāgas, how wondrous! This world abides by the movement of various actions, and with various objects of mind, various actions are manifested and accumulated, and by this, beings also become diverse. O Lord of the Nāgas, look at this retinue and in this great ocean, how many various forms there are, and how many ordinary forms appear. O Lord of the Nāgas, all of these have become diverse because of the various virtuous and non-virtuous actions of their own minds, bodies, speech, and intentions. The mind is formless, invisible, and ungraspable. O Lord of the Nāgas, thus all of these are characterized by abiding through artificial fabrication, without a lord, without a self, without complete grasping. They are the various accomplishments of how actions have been accumulated, and there is no agent in this. O Lord of the Nāgas, thus all these dharmas are of the nature of inconceivable illusion. O Lord of the Nāgas, therefore, a wise Bodhisattva

Having understood that all phenomena are characterized by arising from accumulation, one should manifest virtuous actions. If one engages in manifesting virtuous actions, then the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are manifested by the phenomena characterized by arising from accumulation will manifest as beautiful, pleasing, and well-formed. O Lord of the Nāgas, the body of the Tathāgata is born from hundreds of thousands of millions of koṭis of merit, adorned with marks, accomplished in such a way, and having subdued the world with gods and humans with glory, abides without attachment. Behold, even these great Brahmās who wield power over hundreds of thousands of tens of millions become dim and their eyes become dazzled when they look upon the body of the Tathāgata. O Lord of the Nāgas, behold the forms, marks, bodies, and ornaments of these Bodhisattvas. O Lord of the Nāgas, all of them are adorned and accomplished by the manifestation of virtuous actions. O Lord of the Nāgas, even your palace is born from all merit. O Lord of the Nāgas, whatever palaces there are of Indra, Brahmā, the protectors of the world, gods, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, all of them are born from merit. O Lord of the Nāgas, in this great ocean, those who have various bodies, ugly forms, and bad shapes, and those who have good shapes, and those who have large and coarse bodies, and those who have small and thin bodies, all of them are varied due to the virtuous and non-virtuous actions of their own minds, bodies, speech, and thoughts. O Lord of the Nāgas, therefore, one should take karma as one's own, experience the fruits of karma, be born from karma, and rely on the ripening of karma. O Lord of the Nāgas, you should teach in this way, taking karma as one's own, experiencing the fruits of karma, and relying on the ripening of karma, and you will enter into the intention to manifest virtuous dharmas, and you will not make views futile, and you will not cling to nihilistic and eternalistic views.

Will not abide. The places where you give alms will be pleased. Having been pleased, they will also be respected. Because of the cause of being respected, the world with the gods will respect him. Lord of the Nagas, one Dharma completely cuts off all the evil destinies, evil paths, and unfree states of all sentient beings. What is this one Dharma? It is like this: How do I exist, and how do the days and nights pass? One should deeply contemplate the virtuous Dharmas. Like this, because of deeply contemplating the virtuous Dharmas, there is no opportunity for unwholesome minds and the Dharmas arising from the mind to arise. He abandons unwholesome Dharmas and is endowed with wholesome Dharmas, therefore, beings with pure intention, such as Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, noble Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, etc., will be able to meet them. Lord of the Nagas, then, what are the wholesome Dharmas? The so-called wholesome Dharmas are the root and basis of the perfections of gods and humans. They are the root and basis of the Bodhi of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. They are the root and basis of the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Bodhi. Then, what is the root and basis? It is these ten paths of virtuous actions. Then, what are these ten paths of virtuous actions? It is like this: abandoning killing, not taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle talk, greed, malice, and wrong views. These are called the ten paths of virtuous actions, and they are the root and basis of the perfections of the mundane and supramundane. Lord of the Nagas, therefore, a person who abandons killing obtains ten peaceful Dharmas. What are the ten? It is like this: he gives fearlessness to all sentient beings. His mind abides in the object of love for all sentient beings. His habit of hatred is completely cut off. He fully accepts the practice that can reduce diseases. He has planted the seed that can prolong life. Non-humans will also protect him.
