Are the vast Dharma categories not included? Is the Tathagata also like that? The Blessed One said: Lord of the Nagas, yes, it is so. Yes, it is so, the Buddha's Dharma categories are also not included. The Tathagata is also not included. Lord of the Nagas, what do you think? Is there anything to be designated for what is not included? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The Blessed One said: Lord of the Nagas, in this way, you should also understand that the Buddha's Dharma categories are neither distinguishable nor designatable. Just like the Buddha's Dharma categories, all dharmas are the same. Lord of the Nagas, look at how much the Tathagata's great compassion is shown to sentient beings. In this way, for the Dharma categories that are neither distinguishable nor designatable, he designates them with names and terms, saying, 'These dharmas are with defilements, these dharmas are without defilements.' Similarly, for worldly people and those who have transcended the world, those with faults and those without faults, conditioned phenomena and unconditioned phenomena, those in accordance with affliction and those in accordance with purification, what should be relied upon and what should be abandoned, what can be designated and what can be destroyed, the dharmas of ordinary beings and the dharmas of learners, the dharmas of non-learners, the dharmas of solitary Buddhas, the dharmas of Bodhisattvas, and the dharmas of Buddhas, he designates them all. Lord of the Nagas, in this way, the Tathagata both shows how to establish the Dharma categories and does not truly grasp any dharma as a sign. Lord of the Nagas, for example, a person is born and paints pictures in the formless and invisible realm of space with all kinds of colors, and shows the forms of gods there, as well as the forms of humans, horses, elephants, vehicles, infantry, and mounts. Lord of the Nagas, what do you think? Isn't that person working in vain?

Is it so? I beseech you! Blessed One, you are doing difficult deeds! Sugata, you are doing difficult deeds! The Blessed One said: Lord of the Nagas, therefore, to communicate this Dharma, which is formless and invisible, ungraspable, without letters, and inexpressible, to other sentient beings and other individuals, and to express it with letters, and to make it understood by various means, the Tathagata has done the most difficult thing! Lord of the Nagas, therefore, those who develop faith in or enter into these teachings that are taught in this way are doing something extremely wonderful! Lord of the Nagas, moreover, those sentient beings who enter into this profound way have completely purified themselves to the Buddhas of the past, and therefore, even the evil demon cannot find an opportunity. Lord of the Nagas, I know with clairvoyance that in the past, I pleased countless Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and made offerings, and I also went forth in their teachings and practiced pure conduct. However, those Tathagatas did not teach me such a profound and such a cessation of elaboration Dharma, but taught me only a few words about union, and a few words about generosity, taming, good discipline, and satisfaction, and a few words about ethics, listening, giving, patience, diligence, and mindfulness, and a few words about pure conduct, purified qualities, and reducing possessions. Why is that? Because I had not completely purified myself in this way. Lord of the Nagas, when I had completely purified myself, I heard this profound Dharma from the Tathagata Great Lamp Maker. After hearing it, I developed tolerance for the corresponding Dharmas. Lord of the Nagas, therefore, in this way, you should also be liberated from this profound arrogance of thinking 'I', and completely realize that those sentient beings who create by discrimination, arise from causes and conditions, and do not cling to sentient beings, life, nourishment, and individuals, develop faith, trust, and clinging, and communicate to others, how are they of the past?

The Tathagatas have been completely purified, and their merit will also increase greatly, it should be understood in this way. Lord of the Nagas, a Bodhisattva who engages in the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, if someone were to give to each sentient being as many comforts as there are comforts of gods and humans in the three-thousand-great-thousand world system, what do you think, Lord of the Nagas? Has that Bodhisattva given many comforts to those sentient beings? Answer: Blessed One, yes, many. Sugata, yes, many. The Blessed One said: Lord of the Nagas, Whatever comforts the Bodhisattva has given to those sentient beings, if he shows them even one word about impermanence, or about suffering, or about selflessness, or about peace, or about emptiness, or about signlessness, or about wishlessness, or about no sentient beings, or no life, or no nourishment, or no person, or about the unborn and unoriginated, then he has given much more than those comforts, and his merit will increase greatly. Why is that? Lord of the Nagas, because all the comforts of conditioned phenomena have already been experienced by sentient beings, but the comforts of unconditioned phenomena have not been experienced by sentient beings. Lord of the Nagas, hearing these profound teachings is what brings about the comforts of the unconditioned. Therefore, Lord of the Nagas, Bodhisattvas who wish to perfect their own benefit and the benefit of others should strive in the profound Dharma. Lord of the Nagas, when a Bodhisattva comes into an assembly and, sitting in the assembly, interrupts profound talk and engages in various kinds of idle chatter, that is striving to cause the decline of the Holy Dharma. Why is that? Because as long as the profound Dharma is proclaimed in this Jambudvipa, the Holy Dharma will not decline.
