Being skilled in dispelling doubts and blessed by the Buddhas, one fully upholds the sacred Dharma. O Lord of the Nagas, if one possesses these ten qualities, a Bodhisattva is free from all fear and dread, and engages in the conduct of a Bodhisattva. O Lord of the Nagas, if one possesses eight qualities, a Bodhisattva truly engages in the Dharma of non-retrogression. What are the eight? Acting in accordance with what is said, individually discerning one's own faults but not discerning the faults of others, not despising others even for the sake of one's life, not being arrogant even when gaining profit and respect, and not being humble even when not gaining them, generating a mind of gratitude towards all beings and giving generously, having a nature of sharing, not concealing teachings from the teacher, rejoicing in the happiness of others, being free from jealousy and stinginess, and having no regret in completely abandoning all that is pleasing and displeasing. O Lord of the Nagas, if one possesses these eight qualities, a Bodhisattva truly engages in the Dharma of non-retrogression. O Lord of the Nagas, if one possesses five qualities, a Bodhisattva does not regress from the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. What are the five? Completely perfecting all perfections, being skilled in means; being skilled in the suchness of all phenomena, abiding in the profound nature of the Dharma; not losing the superknowledges, knowing the methods of understanding the faculties of all beings; knowing how to comprehend well, acting without attachment; and also, by realizing the inexhaustible treasury, engaging in dependent origination and also exhausting all defilements. O Lord of the Nagas, if one possesses these five qualities, a Bodhisattva does not regress from the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. O Lord of the Nagas, if one possesses three qualities, a Bodhisattva obtains forbearance. What are the three? Selflessness for the sake of completely purifying beings, solitude for the sake of completely purifying the Dharma, and non-attachment for the sake of completely purifying wisdom, these three.

They are pure. Furthermore, there are three: to purify the past extreme, there is the nature of inexhaustibility; to purify the future extreme, there is the nature of non-arising; to purify the presently arising dharmas, there is the nature of well-abiding. These are the three. Lord of Nagas, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva possesses three qualities, they attain forbearance. What are the three? To purify the body completely, being firmly established through merit; to purify speech completely, having boundless wisdom; to purify the mind completely, focusing on samadhi. Lord of Nagas, if a Bodhisattva possesses these three qualities, they attain forbearance. Lord of Nagas, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, they are prophesied by the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. What are the four? Practicing the dharmas with superior intention; engaging in conduct with pure vision, perfecting conduct; obtaining the power to generate wisdom in the minds of sentient beings; and thoroughly understanding the dharmas that are by nature unborn and unarisen due to extreme non-existence. Lord of Nagas, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, they are prophesied by the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. When this teaching was expounded, twelve kotis of gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Seventy-two thousand Bodhisattvas obtained forbearance in the unborn dharmas. Forty thousand monks obtained the pure Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, in the dharmas. Eight thousand nuns had their minds completely liberated from the outflows without attachment. Five thousand sons of the gods attained freedom from desire. This realm of the great trichiliocosm also shook in six ways at that time. The world was also pervaded by great light. A great rain of flowers also fell. The sons of the gods also played hundreds of thousands of instruments in the sky and spoke this verse:

And also specifically declared: Alala, the second turning of the wheel of Dharma by the Tathagata is turned from this Dharma category. The turning of the wheel of Dharma in the Deer Park of Varanasi, the hermitage of the sages, and the turning of the wheel of Dharma from this Dharma category are the same. What is the reason for that? Because this Dharma category accomplishes the benefit of immeasurable and countless beings. Furthermore, those beings who hear this Dharma category possess good roots that are not evil, what need is there to mention those who hear it and also uphold it? They have well obtained a human birth. They have well seen the Tathagata. They have well heard this Dharma category. Those who, having heard this aspect of the Dharma, generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, all their evil destinies have been blocked. The doors to birth as gods and humans have been opened for them. It should be known that they have already completely passed beyond suffering. Thus it is declared. Then, the Bhagavan praised those sons of the gods, saying: Well done! Well done! Friends, you have spoken well. Those beings who rejoice in such teachings of the sutras are blessed by the Buddha and are tamed by the Mahayana. Those beings are understood by the Buddha's wisdom and are sealed with the seal of non-retrogression. Those beings who rejoice in this Dharma category, except for solely inclining towards the wisdom of the Tathagata, they will not be reborn in other paths, what need is there to mention those who hear the praise and uphold it, and practice it as it is? The first chapter, the introduction, from the Questions of the Naga King Sagara. The Noble Questions of the Naga King Sagara, a Mahayana Sutra. First, the Introductory Chapter.
