Chapter Eleven: Displaying All Buddha Lands Chapter Eleven: Displaying All Buddha Lands Then, the Blessed One addressed the Bodhisattva Ocean of Wisdom, saying: Ocean of Wisdom, thus, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who wish to quickly attain the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment should learn from the conduct of you, the noble being. Bodhisattvas should not merely make verbal promises; they should act in accordance with their words. How does a Bodhisattva act in accordance with their words? Ocean of Wisdom, it is easy to say the words "I shall become a Buddha," but it is difficult to practice the Dharma aspects of the path to enlightenment. Ocean of Wisdom, if a Bodhisattva invites all sentient beings with the gift of Dharma, saying, "I shall satisfy you sentient beings with the gift of Dharma," but does not diligently strive in extensive learning and other Dharma aspects of the path to enlightenment, then they are deceiving those sentient beings and not acting in accordance with their words. Ocean of Wisdom, when a Bodhisattva invites all sentient beings with the gift of the Dharma aspects of enlightenment, saying, "I shall satisfy you sentient beings with the gift of Dharma," and also diligently strives in extensive learning and other Dharma aspects of the path to enlightenment, this is how a Bodhisattva acts in accordance with their words. Ocean of Wisdom, for example, a king or a minister of a king invites all the people of a city, saying, "Tomorrow, I will give food," but then abandons them and does not provide food and drink, that is deceiving all those people. Those people, not having received food and drink, are ridiculed and return. Similarly, Ocean of Wisdom, a Bodhisattva, in order to liberate those who are not liberated, to free those who are not freed, to cause those who have not breathed to breathe, and to lead those who have not passed into complete nirvana into nirvana, causes all sentient beings to breathe and engages in extensive learning.

Furthermore, if one does not diligently engage in other virtuous qualities related to the aspects of enlightenment, then that Bodhisattva is not acting as he has spoken, but is deceiving the world, including the gods. If the gods who have previously seen the Buddhas see such a person, they will mock, ridicule, and condemn him. Those who vow to perform sacrifices but cause the masters of the sacrifices to fall into decline are rare. Even rarer are those who initiate great sacrifices but do not become completely weary of the unsurpassed Great Vehicle. O Ocean of Intelligence, a Bodhisattva should not utter any words that would deceive the world, including gods, humans, and asuras. O Ocean of Intelligence, furthermore, if someone requests a certain Bodhisattva to do something related to the Dharma, and that Bodhisattva says, 'I will completely accomplish this Dharma matter for you,' the Bodhisattva should completely give up his body, but should not deceive sentient beings. O Ocean of Intelligence, you should understand this in this way as well. O Ocean of Intelligence, in the past, in a time long ago, countless eons before, in an immeasurable and countless era, there was a lion king named 'Undiminished Limbs' with a mane like white silk, who followed after loving-kindness for all sentient beings, who delighted in roots, leaves, flowers, and fruits, and who lived in a difficult-to-access mountain cave. In that difficult-to-access mountain cave, there also lived a pair of monkeys, male and female. Then, at another time, the female monkey became pregnant and gave birth to two offspring. Then, the monkey and the female monkey entrusted the two offspring to the king of beasts, the lion, and went to forage for food. Then, a king of vultures named 'Hair-Knife' descended from the sky above, seized the two monkey cubs, and remained in the sky above. The king of beasts, the lion, saw the king of vultures, 'Hair-Knife,' carrying away the two monkey cubs. Having seen this, he spoke in verse: O vulture king!
