Chapter Thirty-six: The Flower Moon Chapter Thirty-six: The Flower Moon Then, the Venerable Ananda rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with palms joined, bowed towards where the Blessed One was. He then addressed the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, if the Blessed One would grant me the opportunity to ask for clarification, I would like to ask the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, about a few matters." After he spoke, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: "Therefore, Ananda, sit on my seat and ask the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, whatever you wish to ask. By answering those questions, I will satisfy your mind." After he spoke, the Venerable Ananda addressed the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, for the sake of asking for clarification, please grant me the opportunity! Sugata, please grant me the opportunity!" Then, the Venerable Ananda, having been granted permission by the Blessed One, sat down on the seat in front of the Blessed One and addressed the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, due to what cause and what condition does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, while practicing boundless Bodhisattva conduct, have their hands cut off, their feet cut off, their ears cut off, their nose cut off, their eyes gouged out, their head cut off, their body cut off, and their limbs cut off, and experience various kinds of suffering, yet not regress from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? What is the cause? What is the condition?" After he spoke, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: "Ananda, when accomplishing this unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, you know and remember the suffering I have endured. Why do you think of asking the Tathagata about these things? Ananda, for example, if a person were to be burning from their feet to the crown of their head,

When it is blazing fiercely and the flames become one, a certain person approaches there and says, 'Hey, young man, come here! Play, rejoice, and enjoy, encountering and possessing the five qualities of desiring that the fire burning on the body not be extinguished!' Ananda, what do you think? Would that person, encountering and possessing the five qualities of desiring that the fire burning on the body not be extinguished, play, rejoice, and enjoy? Ananda replied, 'Bhagavan, no.' The Bhagavan said, 'Ananda, examine thoroughly. Even if that person, encountering and possessing the five qualities of desiring that the fire burning on the body not be extinguished, were to play, rejoice, and enjoy, the Tathagata, when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, having seen beings in the suffering of the three lower realms and having seen the poor, would not have felt joy or happiness in his heart.' Ananda, those great Bodhisattvas who, when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, their discipline is not diminished, not broken, not mixed, not rigid, not defiled, not shaken, not taken away, not confused, not frivolous, not shown to others, not deceptive, is upright, acts according to the vow, and the discipline is beneficial to sentient beings. They will possess such discipline. Ananda, those great Bodhisattvas who practice boundless conduct, even if their hands are cut off, they will not be completely damaged; even if their feet are cut off, they will not be completely

I should also understand it this way: Ananda, in the past, in a time that has passed, there was a period more countless than countless eons, immeasurable, inconceivable, immeasurable, and incomparable. At that time, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, perfect in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Lokavidu, Anuttara-purusa-damya-sarathi, Shasta Deva-manushyanam, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Jewel Lotus Moon Pure Manifestation King Tathagata, appeared in the world. Also, at that time, the lifespan of the Jewel Lotus Moon Pure Manifestation King Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, was ninety-nine billion kotis of kalpas. Every day, he placed ninety-nine billion kotis of hundreds of thousands of beings in the irreversible Dharma of the Buddha. After he had well established them and passed into nirvana, he placed countless immeasurable beings in the state of Arhat with the exhaustion of defilements. After he had well established them and passed into nirvana, he placed countless immeasurable beings in the irreversible state of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, and then passed into nirvana. Ananda, at that time, after the Bhagavan Jewel Lotus Moon Pure Manifestation King Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, had passed into nirvana, in the final five hundred years of the degenerate age, when the Holy Dharma was about to decline, when the Holy Dharma was about to be completely destroyed, there arose a king named Brave Giving. King Brave Giving had a retinue of eighty-four thousand consorts, one thousand sons, and five hundred daughters. At that time, the royal palace of King Brave Giving was called Jeweled Abode, spacious and grand, with four gates, adorned with platforms, gatehouses, stables, windows, pavilions, houses, and towers, and decorated with gardens, radiant and splendid.
