Chapter Twenty-four: The Inconceivable Qualities of the Tathagata Chapter Twenty-four: The Inconceivable Qualities of the Tathagata Then, the Blessed One spoke to the youth Moonbeam, saying: "Young one, therefore, whatever Bodhisattva-Mahasattva wishes to manifestly realize the four distinct perfect knowledges, what are the four? They are: distinct perfect knowledge of meaning, distinct perfect knowledge of dharma, distinct perfect knowledge of exact terms, and distinct perfect knowledge of eloquence. Young one, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva wishes to manifestly realize these four, then he should grasp this samadhi, comprehend it completely, hold it, read it, thoroughly recite it, receive its teachings, chant it, meditate on it without afflictions, extensively teach it to others, and diligently strive in the yoga of meditation. Young one, what is the distinct perfect knowledge of dharma? Young one, as many expressions of form as there are, young one, so too are the expressions of praise for the Tathagata. Similarly, as many as are the expressions of feeling, perception, and formations, young one, as many expressions of consciousness as there are, so too are the expressions of praise for the Tathagata. Young one, thus, the expressions of form are limitless, boundless, and inconceivable, so too are the expressions of praise for the Tathagata inconceivable. Similarly, feelings, perceptions, and formations, young one, thus the expressions of consciousness are limitless, boundless, and inconceivable, so too are the expressions of praise for the Tathagata inconceivable. Young one, thus, conditioned things also have countless faults, and nirvana also has countless benefits, and the praise of the Tathagata is also countless. Young one, thus, as many names of nirvana as there are, so too are the praises of the Tathagata. Young one, thus, the names of nirvana are countless, and the praises of the Tathagata are also countless. Young one, these four are said to be the inconceivable expressions of praise for the Tathagata, and they lead to the ultimate state.

For example, the expression of formations is inconceivable, the expression of sounds is inconceivable, the expression of all defilements is inconceivable, and the expression of purification is inconceivable. Young men, these are the four expressions of the Tathagata's praise that are inconceivable. Young men, these four are the Tathagata's inconceivable expression, the inconceivable teaching. It is not easy to teach them in the ultimate place. What are the four? Those same four, which should be taught in detail in the same way. Young men, these are the four aspects of the Bodhisattvas.
