With great wisdom, I have examined all that exists in the three realms, both animate and inanimate, as well as all persons and phenomena. Everything is ultimately perfect: without bondage, without liberation, without a master, without a location, ungraspable, and not transcending the three realms. It does not enter into all existence, for it is primordially pure, without stain, without affliction, equal to space, without equal, and not unequal. Conceptions and discriminations are exhausted, all thoughts are pacified. Thus, the characteristic of dharma is called the Great Nirvana. If one sees this dharma as it truly is, it is called liberation, but because it is not seen by the ignorant, it is called ignorance. Having spoken thus, he again entered into the meditative absorption of ascending and descending. From the first dhyana, he arose to the cessation of feeling and perception, and from the cessation of feeling and perception, he arose to enter the first dhyana. In this way, he entered into the meditative absorption of ascending and descending. Then, he spoke these words to the many disciples: "With the eye of a Buddha, I have examined all the dharmas of the three realms. The ultimate limit of ignorance is naturally liberated. Though sought in the ten directions, it cannot be found, for it has no inherent existence. The branches and leaves that arise from it are also liberated. With the liberation of ignorance, even old age and death are liberated. Therefore, I always abide in the appearance of perfect peace, and am called the Great Nirvana." At that time, Ananda was greatly distressed by sorrow, and became confused and unconscious, like one intoxicated with wine. He could neither see nor recognize the fourfold assembly, and he could not know or understand whether the Tathagata had passed into Nirvana or not. Then, the Blessed One entered into the meditative absorption of ascending and descending three times in this way, examining it until he reached the realm of dharma, and then taught the dharma three times to the many disciples. The Tathagata entered into meditative absorption in this way again and again, up to twenty-seven times. Because Ananda did not know, he asked once each time the Buddha entered into meditative absorption, and so on until twice.

Between twenty-seven times, they asked the Irreversible (Bodhisattva), "Has the Buddha entered Nirvana? Has he not entered Nirvana?" Likewise, the Irreversible (Bodhisattva) also said, "The Tathagata has entered into meditation and has not entered Nirvana." He said this twenty-seven times. At that time, all those retinues were agitated and confused, not knowing or understanding whether the Tathagata had entered Nirvana or had not entered Nirvana. At that time, the Blessed One entered into meditation three times, and then taught the Dharma to the retinues three times. Then, he lay down on his right side on a throne of seven jewels, with his head facing north, his feet facing south, his face facing west, and his back facing east. The throne of seven jewels was also fully adorned with various kinds of garlands. There were four pairs of eight Sala trees, with one pair on the west side in front of the Tathagata, one pair on the east side behind the Tathagata, one pair on the north side at the head of the Tathagata, and one pair on the south side at the feet of the Tathagata. At that time, the Blessed One, under the Sala trees, lay on the precious throne, entered the fourth meditation, and without saying a word, completely entered Nirvana at midnight. After the Buddha, the Blessed One, entered Nirvana, the two Sala trees on the east and west also became one tree, and the two trees on the south and north also became one tree, becoming like an umbrella over the precious throne. At that time, that tree itself also became gray like the wings of a swan, and the branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits withered, the bark also peeled off, and the tree itself cracked, eventually withering and breaking without leaving any remnants. At that time, countless worlds in the ten directions, as many as the sands of the Ganges River, shook violently, and various kinds of great sounds arose, uttering sounds of impermanence, suffering, and lamentation, saying, "Alas, alas, the world is destroyed!" At that time, all the mountains, great mountains, surrounding mountains, and surrounding mountains of all the realms of the ten directions
