Chapter Fifteen: The Chapter on Passing into Nirvana and Cremation. Chapter Fifteen: The Chapter on Passing into Nirvana and Cremation. The Blessed One then spoke to the many assembled disciples, saying: "Now the time has come for me, my body is completely worn out." Having said this, he entered the first dhyana, and with the light of passing into nirvana, he illuminated all realms of the world, entering the samadhi of peace and cessation. As soon as the Blessed One had spoken these words, he entered the first dhyana. Emerging from the first dhyana, he entered the second dhyana. Emerging from the second dhyana, he entered the third dhyana. Emerging from the third dhyana, he entered the fourth dhyana. Emerging from the fourth dhyana, he entered the realm of infinite space. Emerging from the realm of infinite space, he entered the realm of infinite consciousness. Emerging from the realm of infinite consciousness, he entered the realm of nothingness. Emerging from the realm of nothingness, he entered the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Emerging from the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, he entered the cessation of perception and sensation. Emerging from the cessation of perception and sensation, he returned again to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception.

If we examine all the beings dwelling in the great abodes, these three realms are without inherent nature, utterly peaceful, like the nature of space, impossible to define, without discriminating consciousness, completely cutting off all existence, equal from the beginning, without notions of high and low, without seeing, without hearing, without feeling, without knowing, without being bound, without being liberated, without sentient beings, without life, unborn, unarisen, inexhaustible, unceasing, not worldly, and not even unworldly, with no distinction between nirvana and samsara, the extremes of both being equal, because all dharmas are equal. Abiding at the limit, doing nothing, ultimately distinguishing. Certainly without distinction, performing the activity of the nature of dharma from the non-abiding dharma, completely cutting off all signs, there is nothing. The nature of dharma is those. Whoever knows this way is called transcending the world. Whoever does not know this way is called the beginning of samsara. Therefore, you and others completely cut off ignorance, and negate the beginning of samsara. Then, the Bhagavan, having spoken thus, again entered into ascending meditation. Having arisen from the first dhyana, he entered the third dhyana. Having arisen from the third dhyana, he entered the sphere of infinite space. Having arisen from the sphere of infinite space, he entered the sphere of nothingness. Having arisen from the sphere of nothingness, he entered the samadhi of the cessation of perception. Having arisen from the samadhi of cessation, he again entered the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Having arisen from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, he entered the sphere of infinite consciousness. Having arisen from the sphere of infinite consciousness, he entered the fourth dhyana. Having arisen from the fourth dhyana, he entered the third dhyana. Having arisen from the third dhyana, he entered the second dhyana. Having arisen from the second dhyana, he entered the first dhyana. Thus, having entered into ascending and descending meditation, he spoke thus to the many retinues.
