Like a lion. A great lion. Not a body. Also not not a body. Unspeakable. Also separate from the nature of a single dharma. Cannot be counted or measured. In nirvana, not entering nirvana. Thus, the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata is endowed with such immeasurable and sacred qualities. Kashyapa, this is known only by the Tathagata, not by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Kashyapa, thus the body of the Tathagata is endowed with immeasurable qualities. It is not a body born and nourished by food. Kashyapa, if the true qualities of the Tathagata's body are such, how could there be sickness? Is there suffering? Is there meaninglessness? Is there impermanence like an unbaked clay pot? Kashyapa, the Tathagata shows sickness and suffering for the sake of taming sentient beings. Son of good family, you should understand this: the body of the Tathagata is a Vajra body. From now on, do not think of the body of food with a focused mind. Also, tell others that the body of the Tathagata is the Dharmakaya. Then, the Bodhisattva Kashyapa said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, if the Tathagata is endowed with such qualities, how could there be sickness, impermanence, and destruction? From now on, I will think of the body of the Tathagata as eternal, the Dharmakaya, the body of supreme bliss, and I will also tell others in the same way. Bhagavan, the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata is indestructible like a Vajra, but I do not know what causes it. The Bhagavan said to Kashyapa: Protecting and upholding the Holy Dharma, by this cause and condition, one becomes endowed with the Vajra body. Kashyapa, in the past, because of the cause and condition of protecting the Dharma, I became endowed with the Vajra body, so I remain forever and do not decay. Son of good family, protecting and upholding the Holy Dharma is not only holding the five precepts, nor is it protecting conduct, but holding swords, bows and arrows, spears, etc.

The monk's discipline is completely pure and well-protected. Then, the Bodhisattva Light Protector said to the Bhagavan: "Venerable Lord, if a monk abandons protection and dwells in a secluded place, a cemetery, or under a tree, that is a true monk. But those who follow protection are just lay householders with shaved heads." The Bhagavan said to Light Protector: "Do not say they are lay householders with shaved heads. Wherever a monk dwells, he should only take what is sufficient for his body, and he should read the sutras, recite them, meditate and contemplate them. If someone asks for the Dharma, he should give alms to them, and also give teachings on discipline, the accumulation of merit, having few desires, being content, and so on. But that is not called roaring like a lion. Nor is it called being completely surrounded by lions. It is not possible to tame those who practice evil Dharma. That monk cannot accomplish his own benefit, nor can he accomplish the benefit of others. Because he is a negligent and lazy person. Even if he keeps the precepts and practices celibacy, know that he cannot accomplish anything. If a monk has many possessions for livelihood, and also completely keeps the precepts and roars like a lion, he should recite the excellent Dharma, such as the sutra section, the geya, the vyakarana, the gatha, the udana, the jataka, the itivrttaka, the avadana, the adbhutadharma, the nidana, the vaipulya, the upadesha, and so on, the nine sections of the sutras. And he should widely teach them to others. For the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, he should say: 'From the Nirvana Sutra, monks are not allowed to hold illegal things such as servants, cattle, sheep, and so on.' If a monk holds those unexamined things, he should be sentenced to a penalty, so it is said. The Tathagata also said in other sutras before, that a monk who held those unexamined things was sentenced to a penalty by a certain king and demoted to a householder. If a monk roars like a lion in this way, those who have bad discipline will hear it and become angry."

Therefore, they would kill the speaker of the Dharma. What if that speaker of the Dharma, after passing away, were to again uphold the precepts and work for the benefit of self and others? Therefore, I should request the king, the great ministers, and the lay practitioners to protect the speakers of the Dharma. Whoever wishes to protect the sacred Dharma should learn in this way. O Sustainer of Light, one who has degenerated in discipline and does not protect the Dharma is merely called a householder with a shaved head; he is not one who protects the discipline. Fifth fascicle. Son of good family, in the past, beyond countless, limitless, and incalculable eons, in this very city of Auspicious Grass, a Buddha, a Bhagavan, appeared, named "Generating Great Joy," a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Perfectly Complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, unsurpassed, a tamer of beings, a charioteer, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, a Bhagavan. At that time, in that era, this world realm was also exceedingly vast and completely pure, with a great multitude of people, happy and joyful, and not troubled by food and drink, just like the Bodhisattvas of the realm of Great Bliss. That Buddha, the Bhagavan, remained in the world for an immeasurable time, working for the benefit of sentient beings, and then passed into complete Nirvana between two Sala trees. After that Buddha passed into Nirvana, the sacred Dharma remained for more than forty trillion years. At that time, there was a Bhikshu who was extremely strict in discipline, named Guna-mati (Virtue-Intelligence), who had a very large following, and he roared the lion's roar to his followers. He was very skilled in extensively teaching the nine Sutras, and he proclaimed to the Bhikshus that they should not hoard non-Dharmic things such as male and female slaves, cattle, sheep, and so on. At that time, there were many Bhikshus who had degenerated in discipline, and when they heard this proclamation, they all developed feelings of anger and, taking up weapons, approached the speaker of the Dharma. At that time, in that era, the king of that country, named Gunavan (Possessing Virtues), heard that such a thing had happened, and in order to protect the Dharma, he immediately went to the place where the speaker of the Dharma was.
