What need is there to mention that it generates limitless and boundless merit? Maitreya, for example, the realm of space is without limit in the directions of east, south, west, north, above, and below, and in all intermediate directions. Similarly, a son or daughter of good family who manifests merit generates immeasurable and inconceivable wisdom of the Buddhas. Whoever upholds, recites, teaches, writes, or causes to be written this Dharma discourse, is diligently striving to honor the stupa of the Thus-Gone One. This is the praise of the Thus-Gone One's hearers. The qualities of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are fully expressed in hundreds of thousands of millions, and are correctly shown to others. If one cultivates patience, is endowed with morality, and is happy to be with virtuous people, and is patient, gentle, without jealousy, free from anger, without malice, mindful, and powerful. He is diligent, for he is always diligent in seeking the Dharma of the Buddha. He is a meditator, who is happy to abide in the truth within, and is skilled in increasing the truth within, and is skilled in distinguishing questions. He is able to answer hundreds of thousands of millions of questions. Maitreya, whatever Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, after the Thus-Gone One has passed into complete Nirvana, the merits of upholding this Dharma discourse are like these that I have spoken of. Maitreya, a son or daughter of good family should understand this: that son or daughter of good family has truly entered the essence of enlightenment, and should be understood as going to the Bodhi tree in order to realize perfect and complete enlightenment. Maitreya, wherever that son or daughter of good family stands, sits, or walks, Maitreya, a stupa should be built there for the Thus-Gone One. The gods and the world should also say to him: This is the stupa of the Thus-Gone One. Then the Blessed One

Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses: "When the Protector of Beings has passed into Nirvana, Whoever holds this Sutra, An immeasurable mass of merit, I will repeatedly praise. That one has made offerings to me, And also a stupa of relics, Made of various precious things, Beautiful and lovely to behold. Its height equals the Brahma realm, Fully endowed with parasols and banners, Surrounded by splendor and glory, Endowed with various victory banners. The sound of clear bells arises, Adorned with fluttering silk banners, Likewise, as the bells are moved by the wind, The relics of the Victorious One are exceedingly beautiful. Incense, flowers, and unguents, Garments and the sounds of music, And also various drums, With these, vast offerings are made again and again. Musical instruments, lutes, and various implements, Are struck and played upon those relics, Incense, sesame oil, and butter lamps, Are offered in all ways to them. Whoever holds this Sutra, And teaches it at the time of decline, That one has made many kinds of offerings, Such endless offerings to me. Many hundreds of thousands of monasteries, Made of sandalwood, Thirty-two mansions, Those are eight stories high. Well-furnished with bedding, And also abundant with food and provisions, Beautiful curtains are well-arranged, The places are also completely empty. Adorned with blooming flowers, Gardens of delight and places for strolling are given. Many forms and various kinds of, Cushions and coverings are likewise provided. When the Guide has passed into Nirvana, Whoever holds this Sutra, Before me, to the Sangha, Has made many offerings. Whoever has faith as their essence, Or reads this Sutra, Or writes it down, Will thereby obtain much merit. If someone causes others, To copy the meaning of the profound scriptures, With incense, garlands, and unguents, They make offerings to those texts. Lamps filled with fragrant oil, Whoever constantly offers them, And scatters blue lotuses, exquisite lotuses, and water lilies, And also champaka flowers. Those people who make such, Offerings to the scriptures, Their merit greatly increases, There is no measure to it. Just as the extent of space, In all ten directions, Can never be found.

. Such is this accumulation of merit. Patience and gentleness, abiding in equanimity. Possessing discipline and meditation. Truly embodying inner practice. Such a one, what need is there to say more? Without anger and without discord. Respectfully abiding in all stupas. Always bowing to the Sangha. Without pride and without laziness. Possessing wisdom, stable in bliss. Not angered when questioned. With compassionate mind towards beings. Explaining well in accordance with them. Whoever becomes like this. And also holds this sutra. The accumulation of merit of that one. Cannot be measured. Whoever holds this sutra. Such a speaker of the Dharma. Even if some people see them. They should be highly respected. Scatter divine flowers upon them. Cover them with divine garments. Bow to their feet with your head. Generate the perception of them as the Tathagata. Having seen them, at that time, think this. They will go to the foot of the trees. For the benefit of the world with gods. May I quickly attain unsurpassed enlightenment, think thus. Even if one verse is recited from this sutra. Wherever such a wise one walks. Wherever they stand or sit. Wherever the hero lies down. There, for the sake of the guide, the Blessed One Buddha. A stupa of noble beings. Should be adorned with various pleasing things. Likewise, various offerings should be made there. Wherever that Buddha's child abides. That place I will fully use. I will also walk in that place. I will also sit in that place. The chapter called "Distinctions of Merits" from the White Lotus of the Good Dharma Sutra, the sixteenth. Sixteenth, Chapter on the Kinds of Merits.
