Chapter Seven: The Chapter on Not Eating Meat Chapter Seven: The Chapter on Not Eating Meat Then, again, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Mahamati addressed the Blessed One (Bhagavan) thus: 'For what reason, O Blessed One, do you prophesy that the Arhats will attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi, and also prophesy that sentient beings who are of the nature of not entering Nirvana will become Tathagatas? From the night the Tathagata manifestly and completely awakened to Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi, until the night he completely passed into Nirvana, the Blessed One did not speak or utter a single word. The Tathagatas are always in a state of Samadhi; without conceptualization or deliberation, they also emanate emanations. Those emanations perform the deeds of the Tathagatas. The aggregates of consciousness are also described as having the characteristic of being different from one moment to the next. Vajrapani also constantly attends as a close attendant. He does not cling to the extreme of the beginning, nor does he cling to Nirvana. If there are Mara and the deeds of Mara, the causes of karma, the Brahmin girl Canca, the beautiful Parivrajika, and the obscurations of karma such as washing the alms bowl, O Blessed One, how can the Blessed One attain Sarvajna-jnana without abandoning those faults?' The Blessed One said: 'Mahamati, therefore, listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you.' Mahamati replied: 'Very well, O Blessed One.' The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Mahamati listened again to the Blessed One. The Blessed One spoke to him thus: Also contemplating the realm of Nirvana where no aggregates remain, it is for the sake of greatly increasing the joy of the conduct of Bodhisattvas. Mahamati, in this Buddha-field and in others, among the conduct of Bodhisattvas, if there are those who wish to enter Nirvana by the Hearer Vehicle, in order to turn them away from desiring the Hearer Vehicle and to make them rejoice in the Great Vehicle, the emanated Hearers are prophesied by the emanated bodies.

It is not the Buddhas of Dharmata. Mahamati, in view of this, the Shravakas are prophesied. Mahamati, since liberation is of the same taste, there is no difference between Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas in abandoning the afflictive obscurations, but they have not abandoned the cognitive obscurations. Mahamati, the cognitive obscurations become completely purified through the distinction of seeing the selflessness of phenomena. The afflictive obscurations become completely purified through the distinction of seeing the selflessness of persons. The afflictive obscurations, in order to reverse the consciousness of mind, are abandoned by cultivating the view of the selflessness of persons as a preliminary. The liberation from the obscurations of Dharma becomes completely purified in order to reverse the habitual tendencies of the Alaya consciousness. In view of the previous laws of Dharma, since there is no before and after, and it does not arise, therefore, through the previously spoken words themselves, the Tathagata teaches the Dharma without discrimination or thought, because it is done with knowledge, and there is no loss of mindfulness, and the basis of habitual tendencies has been abandoned, and it is free from both death and rebirth, and because both afflictive and cognitive obscurations have been abandoned, therefore there is no discrimination or thought. Mahamati, mind, consciousness of mind, and the seven consciousnesses such as eye consciousness, etc., are non-cyclic, separate from the side of undefiled virtue, because they arise from the cause of habitual tendencies, so they are momentary. Mahamati, the essence of the Tathagata is the cause of cyclic existence and nirvana, and happiness and suffering, because foolish ordinary people who are distracted by emptiness do not understand the nature of complete purity. Again, Mahamati, Vajrapani is in the presence of the Tathagatas who are transformed by illusion, but not in the presence of the essence of the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly complete Buddhas. Mahamati, the essence of the Tathagata is separate from the measure and faculties of foolish ordinary people, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and all non-Buddhists, it is the Dharma that is seen and realized by those who abide in happiness in this life.
