Lord of Lanka, just as pots and so on, which have the nature of being destroyed and are subject to destruction, appear as distinct differences in the realm of perception of children. Likewise, why not grasp this as well? If the individual perceptions of children are grasped, then there are also distinct differences between dharma and non-dharma. It is not through seeing that one can comprehend the wisdom of the noble ones. Lord of Lanka, objects such as pots and so on, which fall into various characteristics, belong to children; let alone the noble ones. The blazing that arises from one nature and one burning, such as houses, dwellings, gardens, and houses, where the light appears with differences of length and shortness due to the power of wood, why not grasp that there are distinct differences between dharma and non-dharma in this as well? The radiating light of a single flame appearing as distinct differences is not the only case. Lord of Lanka, even though it arises from a seed, there are differences such as sprouts, shoots, stems, nodes, leaves, branches, flowers, fruits, and grains. Likewise, all internal and external phenomena that have the nature of arising, that arise from ignorance, that belong to the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, and all phenomena that arise in the three realms, also appear with differences in the form of happiness, speech, and behavior. The consciousness with the same characteristic, the difference in the way it engages in grasping objects, appears as superior, middling, and inferior, and also appears as pure, virtuous, and non-virtuous. Lord of Lanka, not only are there differences in those phenomena, but when yogis meditate on yoga, differences in the characteristics of self-awareness also appear on the path of yoga. Why would there not be differences between dharma and non-dharma that arise from individual perceptions? There are differences. Lord of Lanka, because of the nature of perception, there are distinct differences between dharma and non-dharma. Lord of Lanka, what are those dharmas? For example, tirthikas, shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, and children.

That which is discriminated by discrimination, the foundation established by cause, qualities, and substance, is called dharmas. These are to be abandoned, to be relinquished, and should not be separately examined as characteristics. Because of being manifestly attached to the dharmas appearing in one's own mind, the dharmas such as earthenware pots that are completely conceived by children, those that are not needed by the body, are non-existent. If one sees them well with higher vision in that way, they will be abandoned. What are the non-existent dharmas? Those that are not of the nature of self, those that do not have the movement of discrimination of characteristics, those that arise from the cause of the meaning of dharma, having seen that they do not belong to what is true and not true, therefore the non-existent dharmas will be abandoned. Furthermore, what are the dharmas that are not of the nature of self? For example, the horns of rabbits, the lips of donkeys, the horns of cows, the horns of horses, the children of barren women, and so on. Because they are not of the nature of self, they should not be examined as characteristics, otherwise they are only spoken for the sake of nominal meaning, and not with manifest attachment like to pots and so on. Just as those that cannot be grasped by consciousness and should be abandoned, so also the objects of discrimination should be abandoned. Therefore, dharma and non-dharma should be abandoned. The lord of Lanka, what you said about how dharma and non-dharma should be abandoned is explained in this way. Furthermore, the lord of Lanka, you have asked the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Complete Buddhas of the past, and they have also answered you. The lord of Lanka, the word "past" is a superfluous word of discrimination, and it is also discriminated in this way for the past, saying "past." Similarly, it is also discriminated for the future and the present. The Tathagatas, by their very nature, do not discriminate, and have transcended all the elaborations of discrimination, not like examining the nature of form, but rather they cultivate wisdom by understanding wisdom, practicing in the signless for the sake of happiness. Therefore, the Tathagatas are the nature of wisdom, the body of wisdom, and cannot be examined.

And so forth. If asked, what is not investigated? The answer is: consciousness does not investigate self, life, and the individual. How does it not investigate? How does the consciousness arising from the cause of external objects not investigate like the characteristics, shape, and form of form? Therefore, you should be free from investigation and discrimination. Lord of Lanka, similarly, the actions of sentient beings are like the images in a wall painting. Lord of Lanka, because all dharmas are not existent, the existence of the world is immovable, free from action and agent. There is nothing to be heard here, nor is there anything to be listened to. Lord of Lanka, the existence of the world is like an illusion, and the non-Buddhists and childish yogis do not meditate properly. Lord of Lanka, whoever sees it that way sees it correctly; if one sees it in another way, one is acting in discrimination. Therefore, those who have discrimination cling to duality. For example, the image of my form in a mirror, the shadow of my body in water, moonlight, the shadow of my body in a fire burning in a house, an echo, or other objects of my discrimination are firmly grasped, discriminating between dharma and non-dharma, not abandoning dharma and non-dharma, but acting. Discriminating, increasing, one does not attain complete peace. This is the secret word of single-pointedness, this is the Tathagatagarbha, in order to enable my noble ones to enter the realm of their own wisdom individually, the supreme samadhi arises. This is the first chapter, the chapter of invitation. From the Holy Lankavatara Sutra, the first chapter: Invitation Chapter.
