Chapter 7: The Chapter on True and Correct Victory Chapter 7: The Chapter on True and Correct Victory Then, the Bodhisattva True and Correct Victory said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, when I am alone in a secluded place, such thoughts arise in my mind: Blessed One, you have taught in many ways the self-nature of the aggregates, and also the nature of arising, the nature of ceasing, abandonment, and complete knowledge. Just as with the aggregates, you have also taught about the sense bases, dependent origination, and food. Blessed One, you have taught in many ways the nature of the truths, and also complete knowledge, abandonment, realization, and cultivation. Blessed One, you have taught in many ways the self-nature of the elements, and also the diversity of elements, the multiplicity of elements, abandonment, and complete knowledge. Blessed One, you have taught in many ways the self-nature of the mindfulnesses, and also the unfavorable aspects, the antidotes, cultivation, the arising of the unarisen, the abiding of the arisen, non-forgetfulness, increase, and vastness. Just as with the mindfulnesses, you have also taught about the right abandonments, the bases of miraculous power, the faculties, the powers, and the limbs of enlightenment. Blessed One, you have taught in many ways the self-nature of the eightfold noble path, and also the unfavorable aspects, the antidotes, cultivation, the arising of the unarisen, the abiding of the arisen, non-forgetfulness, increase, and vastness. Blessed One, you have also taught that all things are without self-nature, all things are unborn, unceasing, primordially peaceful, and naturally in complete nirvana. Blessed One, with what intention did you say that all things are without self-nature, all things are unborn, unceasing, primordially peaceful, and naturally in complete nirvana?"

Saying these words, I thought, based on what did the Blessed One say that all dharmas are without essence, all dharmas are unborn, unceasing, primordially peaceful, and naturally in complete nirvana? I ask the Blessed One about this reason. After asking this, the Blessed One said these words to the Bodhisattva Don Dam Yang Dag Pag (True Meaning, Perfectly Auspicious): "Don Dam Yang Dag Pag, your mind's consideration, the virtuous and proper arising, is excellent, excellent! Don Dam Yang Dag Pag, you have entered in this way for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, for compassion for the world, and for the purpose, benefit, and happiness of all beings including gods and humans. It is also excellent that you think to ask the Tathagata about this very meaning. Don Dam Yang Dag Pag, therefore listen, and I will explain to you what I meant when I said that all dharmas are without essence, all dharmas are unborn, unceasing, primordially peaceful, and naturally in complete nirvana. Don Dam Yang Dag Pag, I have taught that all dharmas are without essence, based on these three aspects of the absence of essence of dharmas, namely: the absence of essence of characteristics, the absence of essence of arising, and the absence of essence of ultimate truth. Don Dam Yang Dag Pag, what is the absence of essence of characteristics of dharmas? It is the characteristic of complete imputation. Why is that? Because it is a characteristic established by names and conventions, but it does not abide by its own characteristic, therefore it is called the absence of essence of characteristics. Don Dam Yang Dag Pag, what is the absence of essence of arising of dharmas? It is the characteristic of other-dependence of dharmas. Why is that? Because it arises from the power of other conditions, but not by itself, therefore it is called the absence of essence of arising. Don Dam Yang Dag Pag, what is the absence of essence of ultimate truth of dharmas? It is that the dependent arising of dharmas is without essence of arising.
