Twelfth, the Chapter on Pure Retinue. Twelfth, the Chapter on Pure Retinue. Ananda, a Bodhisattva possesses mindfulness, understanding, intelligence, and proper conduct, scope, and behavior when endowed with four qualities. What are the four? Ananda, here, a Bodhisattva exerts effort to fully seek such dharmas. Having found them, he also cultivates those dharmas. He himself abides in the dharma and causes many beings to correctly grasp it. Having caused them to correctly grasp it, he also pleases them with words in accordance with the dharma and correctly praises them. Then, the Bhagavan spoke these verses at that time: Those dharmas that bring happiness, should be completely sought. Until such dharmas are found, one should not abandon diligence. Having heard such dharmas, measure them with extensive learning. Always abide in the dharma and study as it is said. As one abides, so should one establish others in the dharma. Those who abide in this dharma but do not give any instructions. (Ananda,) Furthermore, the Bodhisattva thinks, "It would not be good if those dharmas I have heard were to disappear; it would not be good if some of my dharmas were to be taken away." For the sake of such dharmas, he always follows those who speak the dharma. Then, the Bhagavan spoke these verses at that time: Those who always rely on monks, they will become learned. Honored by the king of dharma, they follow me here. Without hearing my dharmas, without understanding the meanings, they will disappear, and afterwards they will not be able to hear from others. At that time, knowing that diligence is steadfast, abandon all activities. Seek those dharmas that certainly increase knowledge. A wise and intelligent monk should rely on those honored by the Victorious Ones. Having heard much, with a tamed mind, one should seek such sutras. (Ananda,) Furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, even when teaching others the dharmas as he has heard and as he has fully understood, does not fall away from the dharma. (Ananda,) How does a Bodhisattva fall away from the dharma?

For example, even when teaching those dharmas that possess profound emptiness, it is done while dwelling on Dharma robes, alms, bedding, cushions, medicine for the sick, and utensils. Giving material things first, then teaching. However, even when teaching those dharmas to others, they do not enter into suchness. Ananda, in this way, a Bodhisattva falls away from the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses at that time: Having heard such dharmas, even if one extensively teaches many people, one will not degenerate oneself, teaching for the sake of life's meaning. Therefore, what is called "good" should never be sought. On the contrary, seeking the meaning of compassion, one teaches the supreme Dharma. Having affection for sentient beings, and compassion for many people, one teaches such dharmas. Having compassion for living beings. If someone teaches such dharmas seeking gain, and someone seeks the Dharma through that, that person falls away from the Dharma. For the Dharma that has been spoken, the wise should abide accordingly. That person will not degenerate due to gain, always diligently holding onto the Dharma. Skillfully teaching the Dharma, and also abiding in the Dharma, the Buddhas of the world realm will bestow upon him the name "good." Ananda, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is one who completely seeks the Dharma. He does not grasp the dregs of the Dharma speaker, nor does he grasp wrong views, but abides in the correct path of completely seeking the Dharma. He completely seeks the Dharma with the intention of entering the Dharma. Ananda, how does a Bodhisattva abide in the correct path of completely seeking the Dharma? When he abides in the teachings of the Khenpo and Acharya, he also does what should be done. He rejoices in and uses Dharma robes, alms, bedding, cushions, medicine for the sick, and utensils. Ananda, in this way, a Bodhisattva abides in the correct path of completely seeking the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses at that time: That is where the dharmas are.
