Chapter Twenty-six: The Chapter on Turning the Wheel of Dharma. Chapter Twenty-six: The Chapter on Turning the Wheel of Dharma. The Great Play Sutra, a Mahayana Sutra, Volume Seventeen. Monks, thereafter, the Tathagata has accomplished his task, has done what should be done. All bonds are completely severed, all afflictions are eliminated, defilements and afflictions are purified, the army of Mara and external opponents are subdued, following the principles of all Buddha-dharmas, the all-knowing, the all-seeing, possessing the ten powers, attaining the four fearlessnesses, the eighteen unshared Buddha-dharmas are perfectly complete, possessing the five eyes, the Buddha's eye is without obstruction, observing all the worlds, thinking thus: To whom shall I first teach the Dharma of all? Which sentient beings are pure? Which are of good form? Which are easy to tame? Which are easy to understand? Which are easy to purify? Which have little attachment, aversion, and delusion? Which have unobscured consciousness? Which, if they do not hear the Dharma, will completely degenerate? To whom shall I first teach the Dharma? To whom, after I teach this Dharma, will they understand and not contradict? Monks, thereafter, the Tathagata thought thus: Udraka Ramaputra is pure, of good form, easy to tame, easy to understand, easy to purify, with little attachment, aversion, and delusion, with unobscured consciousness. If he does not hear the Dharma, he will completely degenerate. He teaches the Dharma to the hearers in accordance with the ascetic practices of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Where is he now? As he thought thus, he knew that he had passed away and that seven days had passed since then. The gods touched the feet of the Tathagata with their heads and said: World Honored One, it is so. Sugata, it is so. Udraka Ramaputra has died, and it has been seven days since then. Monks, I thought thus: Alas! Udraka Ramaputra, having passed away without hearing such an excellent Dharma, is truly a great loss. If he had heard this Dharma, he would have understood. I shall first teach the Dharma to him.

And thought, 'Then, (I) will not be obstructed!' Monks, the Tathagata again thought thus: From "beings are pure and easy to subdue" to "my teaching will not be obstructed," as before. He thought, 'Who else is like this (being)?' Monks, then, the Tathagata thought thus: From "the son with excellent skills named Long Flight is pure" to "my teaching will not be obstructed." He thought, 'Where is he now?' He knew with wisdom that he had passed away and that three days had passed. The gods of the Pure Abodes also reported this matter to the Tathagata, saying: "Bhagavan, it is indeed so! Sugata, it is indeed so! The son with excellent skills, Long Flight, has passed away, and three days have passed." Then, the Tathagata thought thus: "Alas! The son with excellent skills, Long Flight, has passed away without hearing such excellent Dharma, it is such a pity!" Monks, the Tathagata again thought thus: From "beings are pure and very excellent" to "my teaching will not be obstructed," as before. He thought, 'Who else is like this (being)?' Monks, then, the Tathagata thought thus: The Five Excellent Ones are pure, very excellent, easy to subdue, easy to understand, easy to purify, with little attachment, aversion, and ignorance, and with unobscured wisdom. If they do not hear the Dharma, they will completely decline. When I was practicing austerities, they also served me. If I teach them the Dharma, they will understand, and I will not be obstructed. Monks, then, the Tathagata
