Chapter Eighteen, The Nerañjana Chapter. Chapter Eighteen, The Nerañjana Chapter. Monks, the evil demon also followed the Bodhisattva for six years of asceticism, seeking an opportunity, but never found any opportunity. Disheartened by not finding an opportunity, he left with a dejected heart. To this it is said: A quiet monastery is pleasing, a quiet forest is without sound, in the east where lotuses bloom, by the river Nerañjana, one strives for renunciation, always possessing steadfast strength and ability, in order to attain accomplishment and bliss, becoming extremely dull through effort, the demon with gentle and sweet words, speaking and came. Alas, cherish life and live on! If you live, you can practice the Dharma. When alive, whatever deeds there are, doing those deeds there will be no sorrow. Your complexion is faded and weakened, you are on the verge of death. The components of death are thousands, only a small part remains alive. Giving should always be given, fire offerings should be performed, however it will become great merit. What can renunciation do? The path of renunciation is suffering, taming the mind is difficult. At that time, the demon spoke these words to the Bodhisattva. Hearing the demon speak thus, the Bodhisattva replied: Sinful, intoxicated one, you have come for your own benefit. Even if I have a little merit, I do not seek it for benefit, O demon! Those who seek merit for benefit, it is appropriate to speak to them in that way. Because the end of life is death, I do not think that I will not die. Because I am focused on Brahmacharya, I will not turn back. Even if the stream of the river is completely dried up by the wind, like the blood of the renunciate himself, why would it not be dried up? After the blood is dried up, the flesh beneath it will also dry up. After the flesh is exhausted, the mind will become clearer. With a clearer mind, desire and diligence, as well as samadhi will remain. I abide thus, even if I obtain sublime feelings, I will not regard the body and life, but focus on the purity of endurance.

If patience exists, so do diligence and wisdom. If my diligence can proceed, I have not seen such a world. Severing life and dying is most excellent, such a wretched existence is not. Dying on the battlefield is good, surviving after defeat is not. A coward cannot conquer an army, a hero will be able to conquer an army. Even in victory, there is no arrogance, I will quickly conquer you, demon. Desire is your first army, displeasure is the second. Your third is hunger and thirst, craving is the fourth army. Drowsiness and sleep are the fifth, fear is said to be the sixth. Your doubt is the seventh, anger and concealment are the eighth. Attainment and verses, reverence and, whatever is attained by evil fame, and praising oneself and, slandering others and, these are the demon's army that has fallen into the root of darkness. Some ascetics and Brahmins, here seem to be looking for opportunities. Whatever your army is, together with the gods, this world is thoroughly subdued. Like water in an unwashed vessel, destroy them with wisdom. Having well established mindfulness, having well cultivated wisdom, one should act with awareness. What can you do with evil wisdom? Having said that, the evil demon was miserable and displeased, displeased and uncomfortable in his heart, and immediately disappeared. །། The Great Play Sutra, a Mahayana Sutra, twelfth chapter. Monks, then the Bodhisattva thought: Some ascetics and Brahmins, in the past, future, and present times, cause harm to me, cause suffering to the body, experience intense suffering, unbearable heat, experience unpleasant feelings, therefore they are experiencing extreme suffering. Monks, I thought: Through this conduct and practice, no superior Dharma beyond human beings has been manifested, no special qualities of the wisdom of the noble ones have been manifested, this is not the path to Bodhi. This path cannot make future birth, old age, and death disappear, the path to Bodhi cannot make future

I thought, there is another way to extinguish the suffering of birth, aging, and death. Monks, I thought to myself: I dwelt in the grove of my father, under the shade of the Jambū tree, secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, accompanied by vitakka and vicāra, with joy and pleasure born of seclusion, from the first dhyana to the fourth dhyana, having cultivated and abided in them, this is the path to enlightenment, which can extinguish the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death. Thinking that this was the path to enlightenment, my consciousness followed after it. I thought to myself: Being so weakened, I cannot fully awaken to that path. If I were to go to the essence of enlightenment with such a weak body and feeble strength of knowledge and wisdom, I would not be showing compassion to future generations. This is not the path to enlightenment. I should eat coarse food and increase the strength of my body, and then I will go to the essence of enlightenment. Monks, then those sons of gods who had faith in me, knowing my thoughts with their minds, came to where I was and said to me: Noble man, do not eat coarse food, we will infuse nourishment into your pores. Monks, I thought to myself: I have vowed not to eat, and the people in the village where I practice also know that the ascetic Gautama does not eat. If these sons of gods who have faith in me infuse nourishment into my pores, then I would have spoken a great lie. Therefore, the Bodhisattva, in order to avoid lying, did not listen to the words of those sons of gods and resolved to eat coarse food. Monks, in this way, the Bodhisattva practiced asceticism and austerities for six years, and then rose from that seat and began to eat coarse food, such as molasses and lentil soup, and...
