Chapter Fifteen, The Chapter on Renunciation. Chapter Fifteen, The Chapter on Renunciation. Monks, thereafter the Bodhisattva thought: 'It is not appropriate for me to renounce without informing the great King Śuddhodana, nor without the permission of my father, as it would be considered ungrateful.' So, that night he hardly slept, and he came out of the pavilion of his own residence and went to the pavilion of King Śuddhodana and sat down. As soon as the Bodhisattva sat down, all the pavilions were illuminated by light. Then, the king awoke and saw that light, and having seen it, he quickly said to the young maid: 'Little maid, has the sun risen? Why is this place so beautifully illuminated by light?' The little maid said: 'O god, it is not even midnight yet. O god, moreover, the light of the sun does not penetrate trees and walls, it only scorches the body and makes one feel hot. In the morning, swans, peacocks, parrots, cuckoos, geese, etc., all make their own sounds.' 'This light is pleasing and comfortable to gods and humans alike, it makes one feel cool, brings auspiciousness, and does not cause suffering. It does not penetrate trees and walls, nor does it bring any hindrance. Surely, a virtuous one has come here today.' The king looked displeased in all directions and saw that pure, lotus-eyed being. He wanted to get up from the bed, but he could not, and he developed respect for the holy one with pure wisdom, his own father. He sat in front of the king and said: 'O god, the time for my renunciation has come, please do not hinder me, nor be displeased.' The king, together with his relatives and retinue, begged for forgiveness. The king, with tears filling his eyes, said: 'What need do you have to turn back? What do you want from me, tell me, I will give you everything. I and my palace, retinue, and territory can help you.' At that time, the Bodhisattva spoke pleasant words: 'O god, I want four promises, please grant them to me. If you can grant them, you will have dominion, otherwise I will always stay at home and will not renounce. O god, may I not be controlled by old age, may I always remain young and beautiful, may I not be sick, may I obtain a body free from disease,'

Do not sow the land, do not seek longevity, and do not wish to decline! The king, hearing these words, was greatly distressed and distraught, saying, "What the young man asks is not within my power; I do not have the ability. Even the sages who dwell for an eon cannot forever escape the fear of aging, death, and decline. If you do not want the fear of aging, death, and decline, O god, if you cannot grant these four excellent things, then listen to me, O king, please grant other excellent things, please let me not be reborn after death from here." Hearing the words of the noble one so earnestly, the god reduced his attachment, completely cut off his attachment to his son, rejoiced in the actions of benefiting and liberating beings, may all your wishes be fulfilled! Monks, after that, the Bodhisattva returned to his own home, lay down on the bed, and no one noticed his departure or arrival. Monks, the next morning, King Śuddhodana gathered all the Śākyas, told them the whole story, and then said, "If this young man renounces, what shall we do?" The Śākyas said, "We should guard him." Why? Because the Śākyas are many, and he is only one, without enough power to fulfill his wish to renounce. Then, those Śākyas and King Śuddhodana arranged for five hundred Śākya youths who were skilled in combat, qualified, well-trained, and possessed great strength, to guard the Bodhisattva at the east gate of the city. To guard the Bodhisattva, each Śākya youth was equipped with five hundred chariots as attendants, and each chariot was equipped with five hundred soldiers as attendants. To guard the Bodhisattva, similarly, at the south, west, and north gates of the city, five hundred Śākya youths who were skilled in combat, qualified, well-trained, and possessed great strength were arranged, each Śākya youth was equipped with five hundred chariots as attendants, and each chariot was equipped with five hundred soldiers as attendants. To guard the Bodhisattva, the elders of the Śākyas also gathered at the crossroads, intersections, and main roads.
