Moreover, the Bodhisattva saw a monk who was peaceful, disciplined, well-restrained, practicing celibacy, with eyes cast down, looking only as far as the yoke, with excellent and perfect conduct, excellent and perfect in walking and returning, beautiful in looking forward and looking to the left and right, beautiful in contracting and stretching, wearing monastic robes and carrying a bowl and robes, sitting on the road. Having seen this, the Bodhisattva knowingly said to the charioteer: "Charioteer, this man whose mind is peaceful and very calm, who walks with eyes cast down, looking only as far as the yoke, who wears ochre robes and behaves very calmly, who carries a bowl, who is he, not arrogant or conceited?" The charioteer said: "O god, this man is called a monk. He has abandoned the pleasures of desire and behaves very tamely. He seeks his own peace and has become a renunciate. He is free from desire and anger, and wanders about begging for alms." The Bodhisattva said: "This is well spoken, and I also desire it. Renunciation is always praised by the wise. It is beneficial to me and also beneficial to other beings. It leads to a happy life, is in accordance with practice, and becomes the fruit of immortality." Monks, after that, the Bodhisattva turned the excellent chariot around and returned to the city. Monks, in this way, King Śuddhodana, having seen and heard these kinds of exhortations of the Bodhisattva, in order to completely protect the Bodhisattva, had a large wall built, and also had ditches dug. He also had strong gates erected, and also stationed guards. He also trained heroes, and also prepared vehicles. He also had armor put on. In order to protect the Bodhisattva, he placed a large army at the crossroads of the four great city gates, and had them guard, thinking, 'The Bodhisattva will appear.' In the retinue of the consorts, even for a moment, the stream of songs and dances was not interrupted. All pleasures and amusements were combined. In every way, the illusion of women was shown so that the youth would become attached and not renounce, and would be satisfied.

Thus it is proclaimed. To this, it should be said: Those who delight in strife, holding swords and weapons in their hands, are stationed at the city gates. Soldiers, horses, elephants, and vehicles are assigned, not allowing anyone to ride, and elephant troops are also stationed. Ditches are dug, wooden fences are set up, and high grounds are built for the convenience of horses. The city gates echo loudly, and strong locks are also installed. All the Shakya people are displeased, guarding day and night. Those powerful armies also make great noises. People discuss in fear, "From where will the enemy come?" The whole city is in turmoil. They think, "If the Shakya people leave, this lineage will not be cut off." The populace and women are admonished, and songs are sung continuously. They are entertained with play and amusement, making them content. Women display various kinds of seductive means. It is imperative to guard and not let the enemy leave, and try to hinder them as much as possible. These are the omens of the imminent appearance of the excellent Chakravartin: swans, cranes, peacocks, partridges, and parrots, etc., perch on the windows of high buildings, stables, and thrones on the top floor. They become humble, dislike humility, feel uncomfortable, hang their heads, and make no sound. The lotuses in ponds and large ponds also become old and decayed. Trees wither, branches and flowers wither, and after the wind blows, they do not grow again. The pipa, flute, and three-stringed zither, etc., ornate instruments suddenly break. Drums and pottery drums, even when struck by hand, crack and make no sound. All these cities are in turmoil, and people are very sleepy. No one likes to dance and sing. The king also becomes very depressed and heavy-hearted. People think, "Alas, the Shakya people have great supernatural powers and will not be defeated." When the earth mother and the prince sleep in the same bed, in the middle of the night, the earth mother dreams of these sights: the entire earth, together with the mountains at its peak, is shaking. The trees are also blown by the wind, uprooted from their roots, and fall to the ground. The sun, moon, and stars, etc., ornaments fall from the sky to the ground. She desperately pulls her hair and bun with her left hand.
