Chapter Fourteen: The Chapter of Dreams Chapter Fourteen: The Chapter of Dreams Monks, as soon as the son of the gods had exhorted the Bodhisattva, this dream was shown to King Śuddhodana. King Śuddhodana dreamed in his sleep that the Bodhisattva did not sleep all night, but was surrounded by a host of gods and appeared, and after appearing, he also renounced, dreaming of wearing saffron robes. Then, when he awoke, he hurriedly asked the chamberlain: Is the prince among the retinue of consorts? He said: O god, he is. Then King Śuddhodana thought: The prince will surely appear without being devoured by demons, and these are the omens. His heart was pierced by the thorn of sorrow. He also thought: My prince will never go to the garden, but will be attached to this place, delighting in the company of women, and will not renounce. Then, for the enjoyment of the prince, King Śuddhodana had three mansions built according to the seasons of spring, summer, and autumn. Among them, the spring residence was very cool. The summer residence was neither hot nor cold. The winter residence was naturally warm. The staircases of each mansion were guarded by five hundred people going up and down. As they guarded in this way, they made a sound saying: The prince will renounce without anyone noticing. The sound spread for half a yojana. All the diviners and astrologers also prophesied: The prince will renounce from the auspicious gate. Then the king had great door leaves made for the auspicious gate, and each door leaf was opened and closed by five hundred people. The sound of these also spread for half a yojana. Unparalleled sensual pleasures were also arranged there. The sounds of singing and music, and the dancing girls, were also always arranged there. Monks, then the Bodhisattva said to the charioteer: Today, go to the garden.

Quickly harness the chariot to the garden! Then, the charioteer went to King Śuddhodana's residence and said: O god, the prince will go to the garden. Then, King Śuddhodana thought: I have never taken the prince to the garden, so in order to see a good place, if I take the prince to the garden, but the prince is surrounded by young women and enjoys happiness, it will not be revealed. Then, King Śuddhodana, with love and respect for the Bodhisattva, said: In seven days, the prince will go to the garden to see a good place. There, you should remove all unpleasant things from the prince's eyes, and arrange all pleasant and scenic things. And announce it in the city. Then, on the seventh day, the whole city was decorated. The garden was also beautifully decorated, with various colored cloth banners hanging. It was carefully decorated with umbrellas, flags, and banners. The road that the Bodhisattva passed was also swept clean, sprinkled with perfume, and scattered with flowers. Incense was burned from incense burners, decorated with bottles filled with water, and trees were also erected, with various colored silk banners hanging. Precious bells, bell nets, garlands, and beads were hung. The arrangement of the four armies was made. The attendants also worked hard to decorate the retinue of the young queen. Then, the Bodhisattva went to the garden from the east gate of the city with great pomp. Then, due to the power of the Bodhisattva himself, the sons of the gods of the Pure Abode showed on the road an old man who was hunched over, crooked, with veins protruding from his body, sparse teeth, a body full of wrinkles, hair falling out, bent like a roof rafter, emaciated, leaning on a cane, exhausted of strength, youth gone, a rough sound coming from his throat, his body bent, leaning on a cane, all his limbs and joints trembling.

Then, the Bodhisattva wisely said to the charioteer, "Charioteer, this person is thin and weak, his flesh and blood are dried up, his sinews and skin are exposed, his head is white, his teeth have fallen out, his body is extremely emaciated, he leans on a cane, walks unsteadily, and is in great pain." The charioteer replied, "Deity, this person is overcome by old age, his senses have declined, he is suffering and his diligence has weakened, he is despised by his relatives, has become helpless, is unable to do anything, and is abandoned like a tree in the forest." The Bodhisattva said, "Is this the fate of a particular group of people, or is it unavoidable for all beings? Please tell me the truth, and I will think about it carefully after hearing it." The charioteer replied, "Deity, this is not the fate of a caste, nor the fate of a region, but all beings are destroyed by old age after reaching their prime. Your parents, relatives, and friends will also not be able to escape the fate of old age." The Bodhisattva said, "Charioteer, foolish children, ignorant people, who are arrogant and intoxicated with pleasure in their youth, do not see old age. I will return, quickly turn my chariot around. Since I will also age, why should I seek pleasure?" After that, the Bodhisattva turned the best chariot around and returned to the city. Monks, similarly, at another time, the Bodhisattva entered the garden from the south gate of the city with great pomp, and on the way, he saw a person afflicted with disease, suffering from edema, with a weak body, immersed in his own urine, helpless, without protection, very emaciated, and needing to breathe with difficulty. After seeing this, the Bodhisattva wisely said to the charioteer, "Charioteer, this person is rough and ugly, all his senses have declined, his breathing is extremely difficult, his limbs are withered, his abdomen is swollen, he is in great pain, and he is lying in filthy urine and feces, who is this?" The charioteer replied, "Deity, this person is afflicted with disease, faces the threat of death, has no health or splendor, his strength has also been exhausted, and he has no protection or refuge.
