manifestly accomplished and thus obtain the light of wisdom for all dharmas. Then, the venerable Elephant Hand addressed the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, if someone were to say that the branch dharmas spoken by the Tathagata have disappeared, then who will become the guide? Because there is no guide, it is said that the true dharma has disappeared. Because the true dharma has disappeared, it is also said that the Tathagata has also disappeared, therefore this is also said to be not completely subduing all sentient beings, if they say this, then how should we answer? The Blessed One said: Elephant Hand, if there is such a question, then one should answer in this way. The Tathagata is omniscient, which is known and seen by many people, especially because the time for taming sentient beings has passed, although he has completely passed into nirvana, he is still beneficial. Furthermore, the Tathagata also prophesied that future Buddhas will attain complete and perfect enlightenment, therefore he is actually continuing the lineage of the Buddha, so that it is not interrupted. Because the dharma of all Buddhas is the dharma of one Buddha, therefore one should know the dharma of the Tathagata. What is the dharma of the Tathagata, that is the dharma of the Buddha, therefore, when the Tathagata practiced the bodhisattva conduct in the past, one should know that he acted as he said, and spoke as he acted. One should say this. The venerable Elephant Hand addressed the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, the Tathagata is completely seeking all dharmas, and has completely understood all dharmas. Elephant Hand, whoever speaks truthfully, saying, "Who has appeared in the world without error, benefiting sentient beings, establishing the world, including the gods, in happiness, becoming the great teacher of all, indicating the right path, liberated by true wisdom, without elaboration, having gone to the other shore, and able to completely cross over those who have not yet crossed over?" If someone says, "That is the Buddha, the Bhagavan, myself," that person speaks truthfully. Elephant Hand, whoever truthfully says, "Who is without deception and repays kindness?" If someone says, "That is I," that person speaks truthfully, because whatever little thing any sentient being has done for me, that thing will not be in vain. Elephant Hand, from the time I first generated the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete bodhicitta, I have never turned back or changed in my mind, nor have I ever truly remembered clinging to or liking the vehicle of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but I have taught that Dharma, so among my retinue, those who single-mindedly pursue the fruit of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas only arise with the intention to grasp it. Elephant Hand, in the past, I was a non-Buddhist sage. At that time, my wisdom was bright and sharp, I was learned and eloquent, so I obtained tolerance of the profound Dharma. At that time, there were five hundred young Brahmins who lived at home, saw the faults of the five desires, saw the benefits of renunciation, and then renounced their homes and went forth, practicing the path. All of them came to me, and I taught them the Dharma, and they thereby attained the path of the Solitary Buddha, possessing the six superknowledges, obtaining freedom of mind, possessing the feet of miracles, and constantly manifesting in the sky by the power of miracles, going to towns and

Having entered cities and towns, he begged for food and offered it to them. At that time, he thought to himself: 'These beings possess great wisdom that is completely pure, I should be the one to receive their offerings,' and therefore he exerted himself with diligence. Elephant Hand, through diligent effort, when he actualized that Dharma, a god from the Pure Abodes came, manifested his body, and said to me: 'Hey, do not cling to this wisdom. You will realize the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and will proclaim it to immeasurable and countless sentient beings.' Elephant Hand, at that time, having heard such teachings, he abandoned meditation, and his mind obtained great joy. For half a month, he remained in solitude, and joy pervaded his entire body. Elephant Hand, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, the gods will know, and he will also obtain great joy, and he himself will know that he has attained the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. What are the four? A Bodhisattva first generates the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment himself, and also encourages others to generate the mind of enlightenment. Seeing those who have generated the mind of the Great Vehicle, he does not become jealous, and he thinks that the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment should be attained by me alone, and not by others. For sentient beings who behave improperly, he gives timely admonishments, speaks words with a kind heart, and completely protects their roots of virtue. He himself always cultivates the Dharma extensively with a diligent mind, and teaches it to others, without stinginess. Elephant Hand, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva possesses these four qualities, the gods will also know, and he himself will know that he will realize enlightenment.
