Chapter Seven: The Chapter on Answering Objections. Chapter Seven: The Chapter on Answering Objections. Then, at that time, in that very assembly, there was a monk named Elephant Hand (Glang po che'i lag) who was gathered and sitting. He rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, pressed his palms together, and said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, when I heard about these difficult practices from the Thus-Gone One, the hairs of my body stood on end and tears came forth. Now I wish to ask something. Blessed One, you yourself said, 'When I was previously acting as a Bodhisattva, I acted as I spoke, and I spoke as I acted.' Blessed One, from the very first arising of your mind, you vowed to completely tame all sentient beings. If you truly made such a vow, then now, since the sentient beings you are to tame are not yet exhausted, you will pass into complete nirvana. After the Thus-Gone One passes into nirvana, if someone clearly says, 'Your great teacher previously vowed to completely tame all sentient beings,' and then asks, 'Since sentient beings are not yet exhausted, why did you yourself pass into complete nirvana?' If someone were to object in this way, how should I answer him?" The Blessed One said to the monk Elephant Hand: "If someone were to object in that way, ask him this: 'What kind of dharma do you consider to be a sentient being?' If he says, 'The aggregates, sense bases, and elements are what I consider to be sentient beings,' then ask him again, 'Do you consider sentient beings to be the aggregates, sense bases, and elements when they are assembled and gathered together, or when they are separated and divided?' If he says, 'I consider sentient beings to be the aggregates, sense bases, and elements when they are assembled together,' then say to him, 'You yourself have already answered.' Why is that? Because assembly is a sentient being, and the aggregates, sense bases, and

Because "I" is not a sentient being, the Dharma spoken by the Blessed One is also spoken for the purpose of separation and expansion, not for the purpose of gathering and accumulating. The Blessed One delights in the conduct of separation and liberation, and does not delight in gathering and accumulating, because gathering and accumulating is considered to be sentient beings. If someone says, "The skandhas, ayatanas, and dhatus themselves are sentient beings," then refute him by saying, "If that is the case, then all grass, trees, tiles, and stones would also become sentient beings." Why? Because you say that the skandhas, ayatanas, and dhatus themselves are sentient beings, and they possess skandhas, ayatanas, and dhatus. If someone says, "Because they have no mind and no phenomena arising from the mind, they are not sentient beings," then refute him by saying, "If that is the case, then all sentient beings would become one sentient being." Why? Because the Tathagata has not said that there is any difference between the skandhas, ayatanas, and dhatus. If someone says, "The scriptures of the Tathagata say that there are sentient beings, therefore there are sentient beings," then refute him by saying, "You have already answered yourself." Why? Because the teachings of the Tathagata say that it is separate from existence and non-existence. If someone says, "If that is the case, then the fruit of the path will also not exist," then ask him, "What do you consider to be the fruit?" If someone says, "I consider whatever is completely determined to be the fruit," then refute him by saying, "For the ultimate meaning of complete determination, there are no sounds or words. For that which has no sounds or words, it cannot be said to definitely exist or not exist. You consider the ultimate meaning of complete determination to be the fruit, but in the ultimate meaning of complete determination, there are neither sentient beings nor the names of sentient beings. Therefore, the statement you made that 'there are sentient beings' is something you have refuted yourself." Furthermore, like an elephant's trunk...

In the teachings of the Tathagata, it is said that all phenomena do not cease, which also serves to pacify suffering. I have thoroughly realized the true nature of all phenomena in this way, and how the phenomena that are understood do not have obvious attachment to sentient beings, are extremely peaceful, have no elaboration, no obvious fabrication, and no arising. Elephant Hand, whoever understands the meaning of the Dharma I have taught in this way, I will not initiate karmic actions for the sake of existence and non-existence. Whoever does not initiate karmic actions for the sake of existence and non-existence, how will he see sentient beings as existing or not existing? Elephant Hand, this is called constantly abiding in the true nature of all phenomena. In this, there is also no conceptualization of recollection consciousness, no defilement, no complete purity, no coming, no going, no path, no fruit of the path, no long, no short, no square, no round, no shape, and no color. Therefore, this is the only gate of all phenomena, and the gate of Samadhi is taught in this way. Elephant Hand, this is called seeing the gate of Dharma. Whoever enters the gate of seeing Dharma is called seeing the Buddha. Elephant Hand, what do you think? By what Dharma can one see the Buddha? Is that Dharma the nature of cessation, cessation, and the cessation that will cease? World Honored One, it is not. What do you think? By what Dharma can one see the Buddha? Is that Dharma the nature of birth, birth, and the birth that will be born? World Honored One, it is not. Elephant Hand, if that is the case, the Tathagata should not be called cessation. World Honored One, indeed it is so. Elephant Hand, if someone says this, because I have the characteristic of a body, I say that the Tathagata will not return after entering complete Nirvana. This is also because seeing the nature of the body no longer returns, so it is said that the Tathagata ceases.
